Shrinking Dollar Meets Its Match In Dolphin Teeth

Solomon Islands Prize
Commodity Over Cash;
Closing In for the Kill
By YAROSLAV TROFIMOV
April 30, 2008; Page A1

HONIARA, Solomon Islands -- Forget the euro and the yen. In this South Pacific archipelago, people are pouring their savings into another appreciating currency: dolphin teeth.

Shaped like miniature ivory jalapeños, the teeth of spinner dolphins have facilitated commerce in parts of the Solomon Islands for centuries. This traditional currency is gaining in prominence now after years of ethnic strife that have undermined the country's economy and rekindled attachment to ancient customs.

Over the past year, one spinner tooth has soared in price to about two Solomon Islands dollars (26 U.S. cents), from as little as 50 Solomon Islands cents.

I can't recall the name of the beach(s). All that I recall can is that they have a myriad of private activity acess gates.

From a distance, the cap'n was curious why so many boats would gather near the surface of a shallow beach. Once we got closer, we saw one "thing" move quicker and the other thing moved more delibterate.

The two things met. KAABOOM.
The moment after the KAABOOM, all boats b-line to be somewhere else.
Is this the Cap'n your talking about?

Beware: This guy does not practice dolphin safe tuna.

WTF is this thread?!

For those of you who ever come down pneumonia and find yourself hallucinating and in a serious "state of delerium," please see a Doctor sooner than I. Scary ish.

Sadly, I remember none of this. For the sake of my mental health, please never mention this thread again because I'm just not quite ready to understand how bad of shape I was in. Thanks STR.

To put things into perspective, I was taken to the ER on Saturday 4/26 with a fever of 103 something and passed in and out of consciousness until about 8 or so that evening...I think.

Dr. Rumack:You'd better tell the Cap'N we've got to land as soon as we can. This man has to be gotten to a hospital.

Elaine Dickinson:A hospital--what is it?

Dr. Rumack:It's a big building with patients, but that's not important right now.

I can finally sleep. Havnt had good rest since this crappy thread started.

New STR rule. If your temp is over 100, put the mouse and keyboard down. It'll only result in some crazy ass thread that will haunt us for weeks.

Hehe...

Thanks guys.

Man, scary thing about that state of delerium is that everything in my head actually felt real. Oddest feeling in the damn world. Please see original post. I can't actually recall anything from that original post, but I'm dead certain it felt real as hell.

What's been weird has been asking friends over the past few weeks if stuff actually happened. I was positive that my friend Nick had been in a fight. Asking him about his recovery was an odd conversation.
Me: "Dude, how's the leg?"
Nick: ...

As if it couldn't have been any worse, the girl who originally helped me in the ER was crazy cute. I didn't actually acknowledge her beauty at the time (no s**t), but she was my "Care Technician" a day or two later. Nothing makes a better impression than having a girl see you at your absolute worst. Nice.

Thankfully no pink elephants running through the room, but my handwriting isn't quite right.

A HUGE explosion comes from the water. The guy immediately gets on the CG radio to inform them of the activity.

Dude, they're dolphins!
