Default Kayak race pics

There is a big kayak festival here in Kernville this weekend. There are slalom and downriver races and freestyle competitions. One of the events is the Brush Creek race.

Brush Creek is a small creek that flows through a spectacular Granite canyon on the way to the Kern. There are many slides and waterfalls up to 18'. It is low volume creek boating. It's popularity has skyrocketed over the last 6 years or so. Back in the day (early 90's) we used to boat this all the time. We were the only ones on it. Now it has become a race at a major kayak event. It is the same type of progression that mountainbiking has experienced.

The kids, Melanie and I went up to check it out today and I took some pictures.

that'd screw up your back i bet. the impact from hitting the water after dropping off a fall would mess up your lowere back i bet after doing it enough

You take the shredder I'll take my kayak. It would be great to do a weekend of kayaking and biking and camping. The brewery sounds like a good idea as well. I have done Brush Creek a number of times and it's a blast. Since I haven't boated in a couple of seasons I might need to do some warm-up runs elsewhere first.

Default The shredder

That is one craft that I have never paddled. I have been in just about everything else. I've R2ed tons but mostly in a scout. I rafted Brush Creek once at low water in a mini-me. We were getting it out of there after using it as a camera platform for a commercial. It was to low to be fun. I would much rather be in a kayak on that creek anyway. The landings are much softer.

I would suggest taking a kayak class from Sierra South. Kayaking is one of those "pay your dues" sports like surfing. A class taught by a pro can really make a huge difference.

It's a rush for sure, but I'd prefer a small cataraft. Being upside-down underwater doesn't appeal to me.

Like these:

The dark ones are of the shredder on an sunset/moonlight run.

The wide shot shows the upper half of the canyon.

The last is a small cataraft, just for Autoduel!

Man, that looks hairy. I can only imagine what it looks like as you go over. I have a few friends who have been kayaking/canoeing for years. They've tried to get me to go a number of times, but my biking takes priority so I haven't been yet. I have no desire to go down that stuff though. These friends of mine get some damage every year though. Chris broke his arm and wrist on a tributary off the American last spring and didn't get back on the water till almost all the snow melt was gone. He said the level was just to weak to be any fun.

Jeff is there beginner stuff around your place, but not to easy?

Very cool. We used to go down putah creek in small oar boats back in the day. nothing big, only II+, but boy was it a fun adventure considering how narrow it was in places. If I lived near the sierra's I'd definitely hava cataraft in my stable. Price of admission is similar to a nice bike.
