Another Jetta diesel vote...my '04 gets 43mpg with cruise control set at 80. I also own an '04 Civic, 35mpg at 75mph. Guess which one is way more fun to drive, more comfortable, quieter at speed, and has amazing 60 -90 mph no-downshift passing power. New Jetta diesels are even cleaner and get close to 50mpg.

edit: But I do still have my two 4WD's at 11mpg & 18mpg.

In my humble opinion Toyota make some of the most reliable cars you can buy.I drove a 1983-84 celica ( 22re) and even at its age still got 20 miles per gallon. You can not go wrong with a Corolla or camary.I have the luxury of driving every car made for the most part.

i've been looking at smaller cars too, recently. My lease is up in a year and already i can't wait to get into something smaller. My Escape is a 4 cylinder so it gets decent gas mileage, but i'm so ready for something zippier and smaller. i am still kicking myself for getting rid of my Mazda Protege 5 sport wagon. When I see one driving by on the street I get so mad at myself.
That was an awesome car.

I love to go online to the car websites and build my own. Yep. I'm a dork. I admit it. I've narrowed it down (for this week anyway) to a Mazda 3 hatchback, a VW rabbit or a lighly used Mini Cooper. I dig a hatchback. And I'm short, so I want a car that I can put my bike and snowboard on top of the car and not need a stepladder.

They need to have diesel mid size SUV's. I'd buy one in a heartbeat.
