I have an 05 Corrolla and love it. I would recommend a hitch for a bike rack. I am currently using a trunk rack and its inconvenient on road trips. They say hwy MPG is 36 but I have gotten 45. Of course the city is less but I still got 33 mpg consistantly.

Such a personal choice, but compared to my Izusu Rodeo (that I loved, especially camping and road trips) the expenses are half, easy.

I'd really like to get a new car, but my '99 Corolla refuses to die. About to roll 180K on it and have had little maintenance done on it other than oil changes. I think my last tuneup was probably 55K ago. I rented a more recent Corolla a year or so back and was surprised at the smooth ride and pep it had.

Default What Car to buy??

I do own a Nissan Titan and I would agree that it is a gas sucking monster. I drive all over the place for work but really did not need the space. I was able to buy a second car and keep my Nissan Titan. I bought a Toyota Prius!

Alright, this isn't a macho car but I just fell in love with the damn thing. Plenty of room for what I need and also I can put my bike in the back area with seats down with plenty of room. I also have found options of a trailer hitch that you can do a simple modify and have a trailer hitch bike rack for two bikes. I have seen others with it locally.

The deep luv comes when I go to the gas station only once every seven days and fill up for $30 bucks! I truley get about 40 to 45 mpg! The tank is only 11.5 Gallons. I get 400+ miles per tank! I drive that on avg every week.

I now laugh at all the big trucks and SUV's......payment is low and the gas pump does not rule my wallet.....

P.S. The Titan now sits in the garage with the dust getting thicker everyday!

So you can put the bike in the back of the car and then the car in the back of the truck...

My vote is for the Corolla. As you know it gets about 38mpg on the highway-has all the options (love my S model). If your looking for a dependable car that looks good and saves gas-this is the car...

what about a mazdaspeed 3? best bang for the buck if you are looking for performance, but if you are looking for mileage what about a diesel rabbit? or a diesel anything for that matter, yeah fuel costs may be a bit higher but you make up for that in fuel mileage. ive heard of upwards of 50 mpg is easily attainable if you are easy on the throttle. also theres the possibility of making your own bio-diesel.

I can't figure out why Honda hasn't made an Element hybrid... seems the have a car for outdoor enthusiasts, they have hybrid engines... they just can't put 2 and 2 together for what would probably be the best selling hybrid around.

I just went through all of this in another thread about selling my TCamry 02 and buying a Hybrid. After all of the dialogue and more discussion, I came up with two options: Keep the Camry and drive it until they produce a better Hybrid, or sell Camry now and purchase an 07 or 08 Corolla. So I must be going in the right direction......

At the time, I didn't realize there are cheaper ways to get better gas mileage. Purchasing a new Prius isn't cheap!

Thanks for the tip about selling a vehicle to Carmax. I will visit them when I'm ready to dump my TCamry.

180K? That's nothing for a good Japanese car! My boss's son has a Civic that has nearly 350K on the original engine (not even rebuilt).

The design of the car would make it tough

A couple weeks ago on his last clutch replacement, he decided to have the bearings replaced in the original transmission. It was strictly optional (nothing was broken). He drives for a living, so he just wanted to make sure it stays reliable.

My buddy's dad has an early 90's toyota tacoma with over 400k with stock tranny/engine. He vows to never sell it, wonder why?

Anyone ever see the Top Gear episode where they tried to destroy a diesel Tacoma? Youtube it, pretty awsome and just showcases their durability.

Sell your truck 1st....you will have plenty of time to decide on what to get and you will be car less for a short time(couple days) rather then making 2 payments for 4 months....I priced my 03F150 below market and couldn't sell it for 4-5 months and it had very low miles and was in GREAT condition....unless you trade it in(sure bet to not get fair value)

+1 My 98 Accord currently has 174K miles. My old 92 Civic I used during college had 376K miles before the block cracked. My old 93 Civic Si had 146K miles and still pulled hard when it was sold. All had decent MPG.
