So I finished my friends motor yesterday. He did not show to pick up the car.My car was parked on the street and had tags expired by two days ( Waiting for the new ones in the mail)but since it was on the tow truck already they wouldn't unhook it. So its the hook up fee ,probably 45 dollars, the impound fee. and a police release fee.So all in all probably around 400 dollars to get it back.So a good portion of the money I made is now gonna go to get my car back.I am so flipping mad and had to vent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Usually, as long as your tags have been paid and are "in the mail" your registration is current. If that was the case, it sounds like the tow company f'd you big time trying to malke a buck. I'd piss, moan, whine and complain. Something sounds fishy.

ok so i just asked my dad about this for you.....
He said they can only impound a car for expired tags if the tags are over 6 months old, or they have not been documneted with the DMV. He said chances are they impounded your car for something else, so i would try to fight it

The tags were expired by two days. I showed them my payment for registration. But the tow company would not unhook the car because it was hooked up already. Kinda like a parking ticket, if they start writing it they wont stop.I was taking a shower and when I got out, heard what sounded like a tow truck right by where my car was parked. Peaked out my window and sure enough.Im sure I can get the fees waived, but just the hassle!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Ok from a previous thread F@%k the (parking) police! If my tags come in the mail today im gonna start smoking! (not)

I don't get it. Was it a parking violation? When the cops stop you they can check the computer and get instant verification that you have registered.

Street sweeper!I dont get it either. That is why I am so fliping mad.Like I said Im am sure I wont have to pay ( except the flipping tow bill, tow truck company's are brutal) Its the hassle I have to go through because the fing DMV.3 months ago they (dmv) suspended my license for child support even though they( occsa) admitted they made a mistake ( I pay my child support,I have it automatically taken out of my paycheck) and I still had to pay a renew fee and drive with an expired license for one month. So I wonder if child support/DMV screwed up again!I am foaming at the mouth now!!!!Thanks for listening.
Edit: child support made the mistake, but the DMV still !!!

Yea what city was it in. They can't tow your car and most cops will just give you a warning if its under a month. I have found the hard way you do not want to F with:
1. IRS 2. DMV

Something sounds fishy hear, did you get a parking ticket, did the tow truck company get a call from the police to tow your car, sound like the tow truck company was scouting your neighborhood for cars to tow with expired tags or any miner infraction.
Call the City Attorney’s Consumer Protection Unit at (310) 458-8336, you might also want to call your local news station, ask for the consumer rights reporter.

I'm guessing you were towed for being parked during street sweeper day and not because of the tags, then? And it probably wouldn't be a DMV issue.

Google "predatory towing". Small Claims Court limit is now $7,500 (I think).

I don't know about up there, but where I live, they don't tow for street sweeping, you just get a ticket. There is loads of info and exposes on predatory towing companies that have contracts with cities, HOAs, apartment complexes. There is no law that says they can't release a car once it's hooked up. I think you got jacked. Literally.

Street sweepers. Now there's an area the govt. can cut back all spending on and I can't think of anyone that would complain except for the equipment operators, parking enforcement, tow truck drivers, etc personnel whose jobs may be affected. What a flipping racket. All they do is smear the dirt around anyway. The street actually looks worse after they go by than it does before they get there.
Save a teacher, fire a street sweeper driver instead. Or at least have them do something useful. |

In Orange if you have a parked car w/ expired tags on the street they tow it not ticket it on sweeping day....IF you are parked w/ good registration on sweeping day it just a parking ticket ($50)
I thought you were going to say that since your tags were expired that you drove your buddy's car and something bad happened to it....looking at it from that way it could be worse
