Default Gene needs a new laptop:Mac or PC ?(MOD EDIT-I got a mac, new poll question)

Gene needs a new laptop. He has around $1200 to spend. He just needs it for email, music and photos. Being a Mac person I told him a Macbook is a no-brainer. But he's a PC guy and can't understand when I tell him a Mac is just EASIER to use and is perfect for what he needs to do. I tried explaining it to him but as you Mac people know, it's hard to know what I'm talking about until you try the Mac.

Hey no more blue screens of death is a big seller eh?

I told him as Ferris Bueller says "If you have the means, I highly recommend it."

But let's hear the group's opinions and help Gene decide...Mac or PC?

Macbook with as much ram as you can afford. Then you can load up Windows and have both a Mac and a PC for the price of one nice PC.

I know there are a lot of Mac lovers here. I've owned several myself, but for $1,200, there's only one Mac laptop that fits his budget at $1,099 and it wouldn't even burn a DVD.

If you take the emotion out of the equation, he can get a considerably more robust PC laptop for $1,200 or less. Really, either one would be pretty easy to use for his stated purposes and he's aready used to a PC.

JMHO.

I recently bought a new PC laptop and was forced into Windows Vista, which absolutely blows.
(edit: I've used multiple generations of both Windows and Mac OS)

If at all possible, go with a Mac. Things will seem too pleasant and too simple. Your reptilian brain will tell you it shouldn't be this way. Don't listen. It's called an elegant interface, and it's a good thing.

I've seen just as many Apple products with warranty issues, if not more, than PC's and IBM-compatible laptops. Most recently, my brothers 3rd iPod in a year, and my roommates Mac laptop.

I still live by the old adage, "Macs are computers for people who don't know how to use computers."

I <3 my IBM laptop!

Unless you're a professional graphic designer, or you HAVE to be "alternative" and buy Apple products...there's just way more available for IBM compatible systems (software, hardware, you name it.)

My new desktop has Vista. Aside from it being "different," I haven't experienced anything to make me jump on the "Vista sucks" bandwagon.

i think like a lot of things it's hit or miss. we have a household with 3 kids one of which is a bruiser 2 year old that smashed the crap out of my wife's macbook. a couple of keys actually broke so you couldnt snap them back on...no problem made an appt w/ the genius bar (online) and went in and they replaced the keys no problem...the guy even tried to clean up the laptop for her. Power supply is and I'll admit a crappy design because the tiny cord coming out of the cube transformer gets heated from the charging etc and eventually melts. replaced 2 now no questions asked. I do like...LOVE their customer service.

KWH, another incentive to buy a Mac, if you are an APA or ASMP member you can give your friend a discount.

I won't go anywhere near THAT, other than to say your "old" adages are... old. And that's not even the software engineer in me speaking.

As I told Gene you will always get more bang for your buck when buying a PC, but along with that will likely come more headaches and less ease of use.
