Default Hug your kids tigthly...
Tonight I found out that one of my high school students was killed last Thursday over spring break in Rosarito. She was a passenger in a car driven by her intoxicated cousin.

I had hoped this moment would never come in my career as an educator. Shock is the only word that I can come up with.

Please, hug your kids closely. Ask questions. Try to protect them. Love them. They are precious.

A girl from my graduating class (05) was hit and killed by a drunk driver while standing on a corner in SD a little over a year ago... it's sobering.

Sorry steph. I am not a teacher, but when one of my kids (soccer coach) did not show for practice 3 weeks in a row I was worried! His parents never called me back.

baja...what station??

stupid me...i didn't check my work email for about 4 days and i open it up tonight to see that she died and i missed the vigil.

i had her in my per.1 class...got to figure out what to say to the kids tomorrow morning.

Steph, sorry to here about your student.

One of my closest friends to this day is my former track coach.
I first met Van when I was in the 7th grade. They closed our Jr.HS, and when they did, Van moved on up to Norwalk High with the rest of us. Through those years, he became a great inspiration for me to do well, not only in sports, but as a person.
We still have breakfast together, although not as often as we should, and he is still inspiring me to do well in my life.

Why do I mention all of this?

Because, I can tell by the way you act towards life, and the caring you show for your students, that they too will have this same feeling about you for years to come.

If you and Dan ever need anything, you let me know.

I put this thread up here for two reasons:

one, just trying to make sense of things and

two, asking anyone who has or knows a teenager (and younger)...to please, please talk to them about not only drinking and driving but about NOT getting in the car as a passenger with someone who has been drinking. So often, kids think "well, I'm not doing the drinking and driving, so it's okay". They are too trusting of the driving ability of others while those friends may be drunk.

It is a message that bears repeating...

So sorry to hear about this tragedy. For what it's worth: This is the very definition of a "teachable moment," and from what you've posted, I'd say your students are lucky to have you as a role model
(plus you ride a Yeti, so you obviously have great taste)
