Default Perspective on Gas Prices

This really puts the price of gas in perspective. You will never think of it the same way!

All these examples do NOT imply that gasoline is cheap; it just illustrates how outrageous some prices are. You will be really shocked by the last one!!!! (At least, I was.)

Diet Snapple 16 oz $1.29 ... $10.32 per gallon

Lipton Ice Tea 16 oz $1.19 ... 9.52 per gallon

Gatorade 20 oz $1.59 ... $10.17 per gallon

Ocean Spray 16 oz $1.25 ... $10.00 per gallon

Brake Fluid 12 oz $3.15 ... $33.60 per gallon

Vick's NyQuil 6 oz $8.35 ... $178.13 per gallon

Pepto Bismol 4 oz $3.85 … $123.20 per gallon

Whiteout 7 oz $1.39 ... $25.42 per gallon

Scope 1.5 oz $0.99 ... $84.48 per gallon

And this is the REAL KICKER...

Evian water 9 oz $1.49... $21.19 per gallon!
$21.19 for WATER - and the buyers don't even know the source.
(Evian spelled backwards is Naive.)

Ever wonder why computer printers are so cheap? So they have you hooked for the ink. Someone calculated the cost of the ink at ... you won't believe it ... $5,200 a gal. (five thousand two hundred dollars)

So, the next time you're at the pump, be glad your car doesn't run on water, Scope, or Whiteout, Pepto Bismol, NyQuil or God forbid, Printer Ink!!!!!

Now when I buy high-end bikes or bike parts I don't feel so bad. I just say, "well see, that's only like 'x' tanks of gas." It makes me feel better!

Have you seen this all electric scooter? A bit pricey, but perhaps the price comes down and performance improves over the next couple years? Not an alternative to high gas prices for the masses, but pretty cool.

well, the main problem with all-electric vehicles is that they offset emissions. you may not be emitting any emissions, but where does the electricity come from?

petroleum based electrical generation (the majority)
natural gas based electrical generation

and for the semi-clean ones:
Hydroelectric, Nuclear (i did say semi-clean), Solar, Wind based electrical generation

wierd tidbit: Henry Ford's wife drove an electric car.

None of the items listed are essential for my day-to-day life. A number of them can be had at a discount with sales or by buying in quantity. As it stands, buying 30 or so (+/-) gallons of diesel fuel a week (at $4+/gal.) is a NECESSITY, and there is no way to pay less than the prices the oil companies force on me.
Call me dense, but I fail to see how the prices of the products listed are relevant to gas prices.

{Sigh}

Cheap oil is just off the coast waiting to be pumped out, not to mention the huge field in Alaska. I've been on the North Slope and seen the pipeline crossing the tundra. Spotless.

Just start pumping the oil and watch the other producers compete to keep their markets by lowering prices.

That's a farce. There's not nearly enough oil in ANWAR and off the coast to make a dent in our consumption of oil.

Also, a pipeline's impact is much different than an active oil field.

The answer to our problem is not to increase supply since all the oil on earth will eventually run out. We need to decrease demand and harness the vast amounts of energy that do not require drilling (solar, wind, hydroelectric, tidal).

I know some people that are Geologists and Oil and Gas prospectors. It was explained to me that it's not really an issue of there being enough oil in North America, but rather the cost of extracting that oil is too high. Places like Saudi Arabia are bigger oil producers because it's cheaper to get it out of the ground there. There are huge deposits of oil in the US and Canada, but a lot of it's in Oil Shale, and is currently very expensive to extract. Most of the easy and cheap places to extract oil in the us (like Signal Hill and Bixby here in Long Beach, and Brea in OC) have long since been exploited.
