We aren't going to change our consumption of gas because the increase doesn't really make a dent into most of our budgets.
Lets say an average daily commute is 64miles/day. The car gets $20 miles/gal and has a 16 gal tank. That gives you a range of 320 miles. So 64 miles per day equates to 320 miles per week (lets not count weekends). One tank a week at $3 per gallon is $48, One tank at $4 per gallon is $64. A difference of $16. So a $1 increase in gas prices hits you up for $64 per month. How many of us can't afford to absorb the increase? Especially when it's in incements of $10 each time you fill up? I'll just bitch and moan over my Marie Calendar lunch instead of a grilled sub, drink and fries for a few days a month.

The problem is, your daily commute is not the only thing effected by the higher fuel charges. Pretty much everything that is made, purchased, sold, looked at or even thought about real hard is made to be more expensive when fuel prices go up.

Hey guys,

Can you give me the lowdown on Hybrids? I am seriously thinking about trading in my Camry for a Prius. My relatives in Europe have told me for 6 mos that U.S. gas will hit and exceed $6 per gallon. I'm putting miles on my car more than ever right now (teenager).

This is the problem: spoke to a Auction dealer today and he DID NOT recommend Hybrids stating they don't get the gas mileage they claim they do. Case in point is the Honda Civic they discontinued.

Every person I've spoken to that owns a Hybrid loves them, loves the savings in gas. But, come on, at some point they must purchase a new battery with labor costs. I'm told $3500 for battery and $500 to put in.

Since we are in a recession and gas prices are expected to rise, I'm thinking maybe I'm better off in a 2007 Corolla.

Help me out here!! Thanks!

Americans like power, and don't want to drive a 90 hp vehicle.

Would you settle for a slow car to get high mileage?

that's my only concern with hybrids especially if you plan on keeping it...if you lease then it's not your worry.

I'd look into something like diesel or even a fuel efficient 4banger

what year camry do you have??

i'd personally stay away from hybrids until they perfect the batteries.

A new civic , corolla, or yaris will do great on gas mileage. Even a smart car would be awesome (embarrassing to me, but just tint the windows, lol).

Smart cars start at $11,xxx. 40mpg+ and are relatively safe.

I have an old '95 mercury tracer....i know...a what?

Regardless, I get like 31 mpg on it so I am happy. I drive about 70 miles a day going to school and work and back home. I am a poor college student. It works for me.

my limited understanding on hybrids:
1. ideal around town as in, stop-and-go driving.
2. expensive as all heck to re-battery.
3. to make the $$$ worth while, you need to own them for a long time, like 10 years, which would lead to 1-2 battery replacements. ouch. (i believe this math was from Road & Track or Car & Driver or something like that)

aren't some bigger city taxi services starting to use them, just due to my 1st point? I thought that I heard something about New York and Vancouver doing this?.

I already have a road bike, and the distance is about the same.
Now if I had a shower at work, might consider it.. Not....

I am, however, considering a new Mini cooper.....

I think hybrids are a joke. You pay wayyyyyy more for a car that gives you a few more miles per gallon if that. My city car that I drive for work is an older Prius hybrid and that thing I think only gets me like 30-35 miles per gallon. Then again I have a heavy foot. Also, one might think that they are greener than non-hybrid cars but the impact these things have on the environment comes from the batteries used in the vehicle. Just buy a civic. I think that thing is more efficient than my Honda Fit and its got plenty of passenger room.

P.S. Hybrid owners want to convince themselves that they get more mpg's because they know the costly mistake they just made after having to replace batteries and such.

Hybrids are great, but you dont have to go that way for great mileage. VW has some Jettas that get in the high 40s to 50s mpg on diesel. Of course...its a VW. And yes, if you're wondering, my love for VW ends in production year 1967. I still jones for my 66 microbus.

I saw one of those "for two" cars the other day in Lake Forest. It was freakishly small. I've been wanting to get one since a company tried to import them before Daimler did. But it was not much bigger than an outhouse on wheels.
