Ouch! Glad I have my little commuter car to get to work and my truck for hauling the bikes on the weekend.

I think emissions is the main reason California doesn't have more diesel cars and isn't diesel more per gallon than regular gas these days? I remember when diesel was cheaper.

I'll tell you what's blowing up -

First, take a look at their share prices of Halliburton and other defense companies over the last 5 yrs, the same time period we've been back in Iraq. You'll see the share prices of all these companies have "blown up"

Next, look at the share prices of the major oil companies. Their production costs may have increased but certainly not at the same rate as the price of oil. So it shouldn't be any surprise their share prices have exploded too.

Meanwhile we are stuck paying "market" rates for gas which are based on wholesale gas commodity prices (that are probably manipulated by the oil companies), which are based on oil prices controlled mainly by OPEC, a cartel.

Just be happy that taxes here are not as high as Canada or the UK or we might be paying $8/gal too.

the sulfur content on the diesel they were selling was too high for cali but the oil industry has since done a better job of it so that it doesnt screw up the emissions standards set by cali's regulations.

I'll be going back to a 4 banger diesel or FI...glad we only leased the tahoe because with the fuel prices the resale on these behemoths will tank out.

why is it so expensive? why dont we have little diesel cars here?
I have a diesel VW Bug, whilst the current price of $4.00 makes me more than a little Salty, it was $2.90 this time last year, I get 55 miles to the gallon (In reality with a bike rack on the roof & driving at 80 mph is more like 44) Diesel will have to be twice the price of gasoline before I regret the move.
My thought process was I'd always have the truckers unions in my corner fighting the good fight.
I run Bio Diesel too, but thats even more expense.
My Bug was half the price of the Prisus, needs no battery changes, & should live for ever

Ok here we go........

You really think Hummers are that bad at gas?

H1 - Diesel: averages 14-17 depending on tire size
H1 - Gas: averages 9-13 depending on tire size
H2 - Gas: averages 12-15 depending on driving style
H3 - Gas 5 cyl: 15-20 depending on tire size
H3- Alpha V8: 14-18 depending on driving style

Now how about the full size trucks from Ford, Chevy, and Dodge that have V8's. Average 12-15 as well. I wont mention all the lifted trucks that are out there that get under 10 mpg.

What about the full size SUV's: Tahoe, Suburban's, Expedition's, Navigator's, Escalades? 11-14 as well.

What about the V8 Benz's, BMW's, and other exotic luxury cars? Maybe 12mpg?

Dont even get me started on Viper's, Lambo's, and Ferrari's. Under 10 mpg.

Yes, over $5 is a lot of money for gas. If it goes that high in O.C. it will certainly effect me.

I average 13-14 in my Hummer H3 but thats due to my 35" tires, roof rack and light bar.

So the Prius will do over 40mpg. Have you ever researched the cost and damage to the environment that producing those batteries do? The batteries are reported to go bad after 3 years and typically cost $6000 to replace. The plants that make them produce way more toxins then any Hummer will do.

All I ask is that you do some research before bashing Hummer. We already have a bad enough name from opinions of people who know nothing.

This is just one of the many articles about the Prius battery:

They regulated it last year, I think diesels also don't require a smog test!

I was reading that the biggest cause of pollution contributing something like 48% in the LA basin was from unregulated diesel engines, most from the harbor, trucks, boats & trains that don't travel on the highway don't have to comply to the immission rules, construction equipment like dozers are the same too I believe.

Here's a site that has all finds of price finders, maps, pretty charts, etc on gas prices: http://www.gasbuddy.com . This chart is especially depressing.

I saw a global price list, but it was kinda old. Does anyone have a source for recent global gas prices?

It's because Diesel powers the world's transports/shipping/etc.

I lived in London for 10 years & never owned a car. $8 gallons sound scary, but we (Gas Users) are being milked in the US. The technology for fuel effiecent cars is already in use in Europe & else where, they are mandating blue diesel next year which means all diesel will have to contain at least 5% of a bio product. I noticed when I was home (UK) last year that nearly everybody had switched to diesel.
It's hard to find here, & you can't buy the cars. The new Satern Astra is available next year in Europe as a Diesel Hybrid that boasts 75 miles to the gallon.
Higher gas prices are the only way for the US to tackle it's dependcy on oil. It will provoke consumers to look at why they need cars with huge engines, how to save on gas usage, & switching to alternate sources.
And I know it will shock some public transport I said it!
You can get to El Moro, Aliso & LW on the bus from anywhere in the OC
