I was on my way to SCST and saw this minutes after it happened. Crazy. I always see tons of joggers, roadies, and yes even mountain bikers going up and down Bake Parkway before and after work. Really sad... |

Very sad indeed.
I couple of things come to my mind, though: 1. She was running on the bike lane, even though a sidewalk was available. If you must run on a bike lane or the road, do it against traffic. I read it on an article about safety tips for runners. The idea is that you could jump to safety if you saw a car coming at you. 2. She was wearing earphones, which makes it difficult to hear stuff around you. I personally like to be aware of my surroundings, so I never use earphones while riding or running outside. Of course I'm not trying to blame the victim. The bottom line is that the driver invaded the bike lane and ran over a person. He should have avoided the accident. I'm just trying to share a couple of ideas so we can maybe prevent that from happening to one of us. My condolences go out to the victim's family. |

"Soto was killed by a car at 6:02 a.m., while running westbound with her iPod on the eastbound side of Bake Parkway, just off North Pointe Drive." She must have had her head down or something. I'm not a runner, but apparently running on the asphalt is easier on the knees than pavement, which is why she was in the bike lane. Absolutely terrible. I hate hearing stuff like this.
