Just like 5% of the biking community is bad news, the same goes for schools...most kids are actually really sweet. It's a small minority that's messed up.

SDYeti what district do you work in and what grade do you teach. I have the parents/parent in laws who teach and all of them are so very tired of all of the politics. I know it's a pipedream but if somehow the whole system could be...started over. Get rid of the funding issues, the no child left behind thang, and all of the testing and get back to the stuff that really matters...TEACHING...the whole environment would be so much more condusive to turning out more well rounded and educated individuals. You will always have those who don't care to learn but its the people like my parents, SDYeti and the other teachers who've posted who put their blood, sweat, and tears into the system that can turn those kids around. If the teachers only reach 1 in 4 of the 'at risk' kids they've been successful. I'm not sure why these same individuals (the teachers and students) should be punished for the governments idiotic spending/taxing/or whatever issues. The teachers are not the problem its the system that needs to be fixed!
I know its a pipe dream and I know it probably can't be done but in my humble opinion its the only approach to fixing the problem that will work. Teachers rock and without them none of us would probably be able to post an intellectual comment on here or for that matter even be able to carry on this debate. Just my .02 cents worth.....now go out and buy something bike related...or at least GO RIDE!!!! ![]()

The Terminator?;
Give me a break the current economic woes are result of too much education spending. We have been awash in red ink for years ever since the priced of energy spiked along with demand and then governor Gray Davis blew threw all our reserves in a matter of weeks just to keep the lights on. Our current leader walked into office amidst all this mess and was left with the challenge of making it work. What followed was a campaign of propaganda by the over funded teachers union demanding continuing increases in spending every year. Against the public tide the governor increased spending marginally in order to accommodate the myriad of other programs. A benefit for me was per unit costs going down by six dollars. I think that parents could do a lot more good for their children’s education by taking a more proactive role in it. Un-plug the TV and get off the internet and take the time to sit down and learn along side with your children. Expecting the public school system to provide more than the chance to get stoned or knocked up is YOUR fault and not elected officials. There are lots of good teachers out there but even they can get sick of these parents expecting preferential treatment instead of thinking in terms of the entire class. The kids who fall behind typically have self confidence issues from being taunted but are usually left behind so that the teachers can focus on the top ten percent who will actually go on to college. Problem is those kids have good study partners and habits in the home already so those with learning disabilities are left in the dust. I don’t claim to have all the answers, and doubt most people will think I am being objective so I will close with what I feel is a more important issue. There is a N.I.M.B.Y. lawsuit in South County to prevent the construction of a new power plant. Only 30% of California’s electricity is generated in state and the rest is imported. All the residents can think of is the negative impacts of having a blackout back up in their neck of the woods even a low emission model. When you consider the entire area would be uninhabitable without aqueduct water local energy production would seem to be a valuable commodity. There is an excellent system of checks and balances in place to prevent industries from pumping out raw sludge and contaminants these days. In the same vein we will not be left with tumble weeds rolling through school yards as some catastrophists would assume, but class sizes may have to increase in order to live within our means. ![]() |

please. even with all of the budget increases, CA still spends less per student than the average state. can't we at least be average? take a look at the prison budget if you're looking for someplace to make cuts. or make the richest 2% pay their fair share instead of making their bush tax cuts permanent. or we could end the iraq war, save 12 billion each month, and send everybody to college for free.
everbody always says "kids are our future" but the bashing on teachers and their unions never stops. if we didn't have strong unions our salaries would still be down around the poverty level. also, that graph from the register (surprise) is a bit skewed (like their reporting)- it only reflects an average of 7% increase per year, which is reasonable when you're starting from near the bottom in state budgets and then factor in inflation. btw- nobody older than 10 uses the word "ghey" anymore. you're on the bench at recess, young man.... The average teachers salary in California is almost $58,000, that's for 9 months of work, not counting the crapload of days off they get. Not a bad gig trust me, my Ex was a teacher in the Capo district and she used tell me about the propaganda the Union tells teachers to espouse whenever they can. Her mother was also a teacher and got upset when she found out some of the stuff my Ex told me.

[quote=FoShizzle;228434]huh? "ghey" is very 2008.....you are out of touch i assure you so do yourself a favor and get some edumucashion at the following
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=ghey i also found kook, tweaker, poser, and homophobe. take your pick. edit: seriously, if you need help with the g.e.d., i'm there for ya. rivet- i misplaced my union propaganda guide, so i'll wing it...most teachers don't make 58K until they've taught about 10 years. and that won't buy you a house in socal. Conceptual art perhaps, or maybe its the monster who is to blame every time a politician makes an unpopular decision.
I know the Register is not for everyone, but personally I could care less about what is happening in West lake village. Furthermore what impact could spending fourteen billion a month spreading democracy at gunpoint, aside from paying one hundred plus dollars for a barrel of America's substance abuse habit. |
