You bring up a good point. I wonder what the judge is going to do here. From the article..."The charges carry a maximum penalty of 14 months in jail and $1,500 in fines." You would think, assuming he has no priors, that he would get some probation and/or community service, some fines, and probably have to film a PSA. But given the blatant premeditated malicious intent, the sheer number of witnesses, and the fact that they actually dug up the bird for evidence, I wonder if the judge will make an example out of a very public situation.

The guy showed bad judgment. Do you think this would have been a story if he beat his wife?.....would he be facing time??

I love animals but not more than people

Like that Randy Johnson fastball video
yes, but the fastball video was an accident, wasn't it?

ball, pigeon, poof!

wasn't there also a batter that hit a ball that then hit a bird in another "poof" of feathers?

also, the guy will pay $$$. it's part of the penalty. from what I know about EPA enforcements, this will potentially be a higher penalty fine than $1500.

it's similar to my criminology studies- harm the environment, pay a fine, do a little time in a cushy executive "prison" and go about your life.

most likely....higher fine as the dude likely makes a ton of money as a pro golfer, and to be made an example.

ain't that the truth. fairly common hawk, so, sort of unlikely.

It's funny how a lot of you are hoping they throw the book at this golfer because he was a good enough shot to nail a bird with a golf ball. I'm sure there's a few more people (Not on this forum) that would like to see him hung from the highest tree.

Yes, it was in poor taste and a bad judgement call on his part.
At the end of the day, all that is lost is one freakin' bird. I'm not advotcating wonton killing of wildlife, but no one would even miss it if no one saw it killed. It could have easily died of natural causes or predation any other time. Nature is a lot more merciless on creatures than a rogue golfball.

He's not a poacher. This is not someone with rifle in hand, actively seeking something to kill. He's not hoggish greedly from the captin planet cartoon, out to destroy the environment. He's just some A-hole with some golf clubs who happen to nail it with a lucky shot. Who's to say what his intentions were? Maybe to scare if off? How much damage do you think he could do with 3 iron and Titleist golf ball?

Let the dude pay his fine or do the community service and go about with his life. With the amount of bad press he is getting and the legal trouble he is going through, I'm sure he's learned his lesson by now.

It's not like it was a random shot, or that he tried once. The guy clearly lost his cool, and took a couple of dozen tries. Keep in mind this is a public figure and a professional athlete who was actually working at the time, filming a documentary. To me, he is held at a higher degree of accountability because of those things. Yes, the bird is a common bird, and the planet will survive without it. This guy deserves to have the book thrown at him simply for being a huge @$$hole.

Man, that is one annoying bird sound....

Still he shouldn't of done that.

When I was in high school a seagull pooped on a friend of mine who happened to have his gym clothes with him. He got up and seen where the bird had landed, he then thru a gym shoe at the gull and nailed it. The bird fell over and just layed there, we all thought he'd killed it. He went over to it and then went to pick it up and the bird bit him and scratched the shiat out of him with his webbed feet. He ended up getting a bunch of stitches and bled all over the place. The bird was later found on the field dead, but he did get some revenge.
