Default micro-managing

As a few know, work is slow right now for lots of industries. A few in our offices have been asked to do research in our downtime. fine by me! learning is good!

micro-managing: a superior asked me to put together a list of what i've done in my downtime. wow. at least it proves that I've been doing something other than surfing STR and the other "boreds"

what's your worst micro-managing experience? I'm sure there could be some fine stories on here.

I hate micro managers. I work in the electrical engineering field (test engineering) I ask these question what is my deadline and what do you want executed or captured. We have people at my work that need to justify their pay check so they have nothing to do but micro manage. I have never missed a deadline so just let me work.

Talking Micro Managing... been there, done that!

Ranger Nancy is constantly asking me what the heck have I been doing .... especially when I disappear into the office for several hours at night.

"You haven't been hanging out on the STR board have you?????"

Errr... no, sweetness. I've been doing our taxes/writing you love poems/studying how to be a better husband/listening to Dr Laura/etc..etc...

The best was when I had facilities post up some 8x10 fliers announcing the availability of a new project I was working on and my boss came to me and said "Those were only hung with two pieces of tape, not 4. Please go put an additional two pieces on every flier ASAP."

This is the guy who corrects emails and unofficial documents as if he's a technical writing professor.

Hourly status reports on a project, to ensure we're working constantly on them.

I could go on and on...

From my military perspective ...

I get what I inspect, not what I expect.

Wow, I would have thought the civilian sector considers those serving in the military professionals and not preschoolers.

at the time I was 38 and had been in construction for a little over 20 years....my new boss calls me into his office and gives me a list of materials our client picked out at Home Depot(sink bases/mirror cabs etc)..she included the 6 digit code that HD uses along w/ the make/model/color....she couldn't have been more thurough...SO he goes over the list w/ me stating that he has to hurry b/c he has a meeting he's late for....I was floored that he felt he needed to go over in such detail...so I leave and he says I'll meet you at HD....
why? I have the list and a company CC...
just to make sure you get everything ok....
no worries a 5yr old could do this and you are already late for your meeting
AT HD I have everything in the cart ready to go when he walks in and removes everything and takes me back to teh isle to verfiy that I didn't miss anything...once satisfied he asks if I need anymore help or can I handle it?

YOU'VE got to be kidding me...
4 yrs later he hasn't changed...he never will..he has control issues

NOT what i meant at all-

what was meant was that in my situation, micro-managing implies that i don't know my own damn job.

sorry about that.

Wow you are even seeing Micro managing at the construction sites? I was actually thinking of changing careers into welding to escape some of the micro managing.

Here is what I would tell your superior

“Well, I generally come in at least fifteen minutes late, ah, I use the side door - that way you can't see me, and, uh, after that I just sorta space out for about an hour, yeah, I just stare at my desk; but it looks like I'm working. I do that for probably another hour after lunch, too. I'd say in a given week I probably only do about fifteen minutes of real, actual, work.”

I would have to agree with your statement. I don't know if I would consider daily status reports as micro-managing but since I have implemented it productivity and obviously visibility has improved. Some people need an occasional watchful eye to get them to their full potential.
