So the time has come for another bike! Although this time I don't have to empty the bank for it...
![]() I had so much fun the last couple of times on the 4X track at Fontana with my current bike that I got the itch for a proper 4X machine. So far I've just been asking a few people about some opinions on a build and what they would change and why. So I thought you guys could help me out here as well! The current build is pretty much this: Frame- Black Market MOB Sram X9 Shifter Sram X9 rear Der. Azonic Strip Bar Thomson Seat post Thomson Stem Avid Juicy 7 Brakes Sram PG980 Cassette Sram PC991 Chain Truvative Stylo Cranks E13 LG-1 Chain Guide Bombshell Fatdaddy wheels X-Fusion Velvet Fork Kenda Small Block 8 tires I'm hoping to get this built up and running before the next SRC race...

Only thing I would do is pay the extra money for the 990 or XT cassette instead, since it uses a large aluminum body for most of the cogs instead of spacers it'll put less wear on the freehub body and it's lighter. I'd also use a Shimano chain myself.

You might want to stick with the spacer setup in case your chainline/cranksetup deosnt allow all 9 cogs. WIth he spacers you can easily remove the big gear and have the tallest 8 gears smallest(lightest) you dont need to big gears on a 4x bike anyways

Mudman, sorry that I'm too lazy to look up that fork, but could you tell us more about it, such as travel and axle-to-crown height?

the only thing I know on the Velvet is that its 130mm travel. I'm willing to take any suggestions on other parts as well though including the fork. The only must have for me is the frame, shifter and der.

130 mm travel? Is it adjustable? By the way, the Mob was designed around an 80 mm fork. A 100 mm fork is ok, but it slackens the head angle nearly one degree and raises the bottom bracket a tad as well. Some DJers ever run a fork set at 65 mm. I think the 100 mm fork is ok (mine was 110) but I think a 130 mm fork will make the bike handle a bit goofy.

Totally agree with Lee. 130mm is a bit much for that frame and will make the steering very quick and put a some stress on the head tube as the MRKT was designed around the 80-100mm range. You want these forks...you need these forks.... ![]()

I'm not sure about the 888's but Marzocchi forks, the smaller AM travel ones, are built around an air assited left leg with spring. It's only supposed to be adjusted from 0-35 psi depending on rider weight, but I've found the recommended weight to cause my forks to "Pop" down. If the 888 is set up like that, lower that pressure by 5 psi until the top out "thump" goes away.

hmm I may need to think this one out. Don't know if I or the bike will be ready to race 4X next week. Beginner class looks pro!
other than a few bits and pieces, it looks like the build will generally stay as is. I may run an Ultegra cassette though... Anyone else have more tips or suggestions?
