I spent a number of years as a police officer in California before I joined the military. I can't speak for every officer and department, obviously, but I can tell you that's not how we're trained. Normally, if I was called to investigate a complaint of skaters or bikers and the area was in fact posted with a sign that stated, "No skateboarding or bikes," then I'd simply point them in the right direction toward an area that didn't have the sign, or didn't mind the riders. I'd even sometimes give them a ride, bikes, boards, and all. I even went as far as talking with a local high school and getting permission for the skaters to use the school after hours. It was the only safe place in the neighborhood and let's face it-if skateboarding or biking is their crime, they could be doing a lot worse!
Now, there were always one or two mouthy kids, but here's where that officer seems, at least in the video we can see, fouled up; He made it personal, he forgot he was a professional, then he forgot his profession. I've had my fair share of curse words, damnations, and rants from skaters or bikers that I sided with, but here's where that officer in the video and every officer I've ever worked with, to include me differ-they, whom ever is giving you some 'tude, can say what ever they want. Go ahead, call my mom fat and say her nickname is, "DA#M!" It doesn't matter to me. The fact is, if you're doing something illegal, I am trusted by my community to ensure I prevent you from doing something illegal that might cause personal harm to yourself or others or damage public property, which the tax payers also paid for, than that's the end of the story. You will move on or be cited or be arrested, but, you will never, speaking for myself and the departments I've worked for, be abused physically or verbally. You can say what ever you want, because I have the last action. As for the cop in the video-peace out, homie. You give me and my profession a bad name and frankly, you're embarassing. Is this the way off the soap box? --->

No dabt that kid will mouth off to the wrong person one day and get his a$$ whoopin. But the police officer could have been a cool down to earth guyabout it and asked them to leave and told them a play that they can go without getting into trouble. Be part of the solution.
Here is am example. I sat with the local kids at Fontana while watching the 4x races. I remembered they where the kids that where mouthing off and not riding the track in the right direction and destroying the jumps and not always wearing helmets. I hung out with the kids and answered all of the questions that kids had they where so happy to be treated like young adults. After giving them respect . I explained why they are always getting yelled at. First I asked them if they where having fun watching the races? I basically said that Like you guys we like to watch the races and ride/Race here too. If any of you get hurt they will shut down the place as far as riding bikes and we will have no place to ride. Wouldn't that suck? Your helmets are just something to help keep you safe and help keep out riding location open. Then I was saying to them Girls don't like boys with no noses. ha ha If you fall on your face you could rip off your nose. They thought that was funny. Check out full face helmets. I think what I am trying to say is Kids listen to cool guys that they can look up to. Respect gets respect. |

I hope that kid's parents brought charges. The way rent-a-blob wrestled him to the ground and took his skateboard is totally out of line. What a bully

Thats the problem this is a Baltimor police man , not a rent a cop. Id like to see that rolly polly tough guy try & do that to a real criminal , not some skinny little skater kid .It would be a different story [news at eleven skate board had to be suregically removed from Fat police mans rear] sorry that video really pisses me off

Interesting thing is, Baltimore is a real rugged city. So it appears they put and use the less capable officers on meter-maid duty. Although this guy is a cop, his duties are that of a glorified meter maid. This position is imasculating in and of itself, then add the fact he has to drive around a Lego car, his self esteem is rock bottom. What better way to feel like a man than to show these little kids how much power is bestowed upon him. That is how megalomaniacs start out...just like Dr. Evil

Does not matter one bit what this kid was doing before the cop did what he did. The officer's duty is to enforce the law. Not teach kids about respecting authority (he failed misserably), not to teach kids respect (again he failed) or anything else. He abused his authority as an officer by acting like an immature brat himself. Talk about an idiot...he gets pissed the kid isn't addressing him properly when he isn't acting in a way that is deserving of the respect he wants.

Suspension with pay is out of respect for the 17 years on the force before You Tube, Baltimore is a city that gets VERY dark and ugly at night. Back when I had long hair there were frequent conversations like this one that were not always the result of breaking clearly posted laws like "No Skateboarding". We don't know whether this was the first time these folks met, or what was said before the camera was rolling. By looking at the evidence of the second video and still being on the beat after 17 years one could guess that perhaps this incident was not isolated. Nonetheless we can all agree it could have been handled better, and some sensitivity training could smooth this out.

As previous posters have mentioned, the kid was extremely shaken (scared, perhaps) by the rantings and ravings of this bully cop. It mentions in an article that someone posted a link to upstream that the kid has diabetes, and that the experience wreaked havoc with his blood sugars. That single thing right there can put you into an emotional and physical tailspin that is hard to dig out of. I know. If his sugars were low enough, he might not even get what was going on around him, and yet still look perfectly fine. He might even say something stupid to try and make up for his confusion. I've done it plenty of times. ![]() I'm not saying he was a perfect, saintly little boy (who can tell, really?), but he certainly could have been in an utter state of confusion, caused by the confrontation and his physical state. Perhaps his friends know of his diabetes (more than likely) and this is why they were telling him to shut it. Last week I went out with epicriderat and a bunch of others into Chesebro, and at one early stop I made sure to mention that I have diabetes -- so that folks would know that just in case I got weird at any point. I can't predict how my sugars are going to affect me or my mental state at all times, but I know that I need to let folks around me know the deal, just in case. I didn't want them to worry, and I wanted them to know I was alright, and I was in control. I'm 49, so I think like that. This kid is 14, and if his sugars were already low when confronted by this guy, then he didn't have a chance. I know there are other diabetics here. What do you think? shud |

My son is Type 1, and it is quite possible. A few years ago one of the neighbor kids got into it with him, when I found out my son was cussing (which was unlike him), the first thing we did was check his blood sugar level, and he was low. So yes, it is possible.

![]() I went to the doctor at Scripps cuz I felt like total shi† all the time and couldn't believe it when he told me what I had. I didn't know you could 'catch' diabetes. Oh well. I shoot up three times a day, and test about five times a day (more... LOTS more... when I am riding). I work out semi-regularly (every Tuesday and Thursday at lunch anyways), and I ride as much as work time and family time allow. I'm 6' and weigh in at 190, and I am racing with the 50-yr-olds this year! Woot!! What else? shud P.S. Guess we're kinda OT now... But, watch for being lethargic and/or spacey for what seems like no reason at all -- could be swings in your blood sugar that cause this sort of thing. |

I am going to get it, Its just a matter of when. My Mom, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, and uncle all have it. Its kind of different when my mom was diagnosed she actually started living a more healtheir lifestyle and actually through diet is able to watch her blood sugar. When I was kid at times I would give my grandmother insulen shots.
