Anyone hear about this? This is insane.
Naturally, Bayer has fiercely denied these claims, claiming that the drug was infected without there knowledge; however, inside documents prove them to have been trying to work with the FDA to cover up the issue. What happened: Bayer came out with a drug for hemophiliacs. However, it was quickly discovered that the drug (which was made primarily of human blood products) was tainted with the AIDS virus. The FDA wouldn't allow Bayer toi sell the drug domestically, so they sold it overseas, specifically in France, Spain, and Japan among other places. So thousands of innocent hemophiliacs and their families have been infected with the virus. The allegation: It is alleged that Bayer knew about the fact that the drug was tainted and told the FDA to keep things under wraps while they made a profit off of a drug that infected its patients. If these allegations are true, then both Bayer and the FDA are at fault for this catastrophe. The defense: Bayer claims that it did not know about the drugs being contaminated or the repercussions of selling the tainted drug at the time (this was before alot was known about AIDS). |

If that's for real, that's horrifying and despicable.
But when was all that? When was the video shot? A Google News search for "Bayer Aids" doesn't turn up any articles. One part in the video suggested this happened decades ago. Of course, that doesn't make it any better, but I just want to know the context. Was this done recently or indeed a long time ago? |

Come on folks, think about it. This is total B.S.
IMHO, you've got to assume extreme irrational behavior to argue that Bayer would do anything like this deliberately. The potential "profit" from sales of a minor drug like this would be nowhere near the potential legal liability if the drug were contaminated with HIV. FWIW, other countries have product liability laws too. France, Spain and Japan are serious places, not some piss-pot lawless frontier where anything goes. Quote:

this isnt the first time that something bad from one country has been sent to one less privileged.
for example, did anyone hear about the vegetables from the fields right near Chernobyl? they were harvested and sent to africa. white collar crime- the hardest part is that the people that knew about this at bayer are going to get at most a half-million dollar fine and 6 months in a comfy low security prison. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White-collar_crime yes- it may be a hoax, but worse and more true things have happened...
