Default Holy Jim Off Road Vehicle Access - Question

I belong to a FJ Cruiser forum and one of the local OC FJ owners posted a question regarding Holy Jim access and Cleveland Nat access... I want to get the right answer to him and "straighten out" the others.

He received one response that stated:
"Holy Jim is legal up to the point of the first concrete bridge thing, where the is a cleveland national forest sign. After that, it is Legal if you have a "pass". You can get a pass at the general store about a 1/4 mile before Holy Jim.

But, it's beyond rare to see a park ranger up there, so dont worry.

Also, if you go off the main fire road (to the only fun stuff there) it is illegal and there will be sheriffs waiting if the property owner see's you. But that usually only happens when there are lots of trucks or if a sheriff decides to drive by at that moment and sees you."

This is a tread lightly group, but if you ever see a So Cal FJ tromping the area or in an area it should not be, let me know...

When you enter Holy Jim from the road there is a big while sign that says Offroading not permitted. Therefore, they can give you a ticket for anything they consider "offroading" at their will. It is basically a judgement call by the park ranger. There is a section that you mentioned about half way down the road that says from this point on you must have a forest adventure pass. So, from that point on you must have a pass and also must not be offroading. I have pulled 2 FJ Cruisers stuck out of Holy Jim, one when I was cruising by on the paved road and noticed one high centered maybe 200 feet off the road and another when I was back there shooting images.

The park rangers are pretty cool as I have been hitting the dirt back there for over 15 years. I have run into maybe 10 rangers and all but one were very nice and said just keep in slow through the canyon. When i was a bit younger I have to admit to blazing through there a few times but now I tend to just cruise back there and look for photo ops.

There really is nothing in Holy Jim canyon for a 4wd vehicle to try and have decent fun on without leaving the main trail which you will get a ticket for once you are seen off the trail. This would not be considered treading lightly which is where I found and rescued one stuck FJ.

Are you part of FJ Cruiser Forums? I am friends with a few guys on that forum and gave one of the members Ernie a ride in an FJ about 6 months before they were seen by the public. He was stoked. His wife actually tracked me down on the street and stopped me with Ernie on the phone asking if he could come see the FJ. He had one on order before he had ever seen it in person, only in pictures.

My buddy watched the Sheriffs stop a bunch of guys on dual sport motorcycles climbing the dirt hill at the entrance of the Trabuco Wash. Tickets all around and a bunch of bikes were confiscated put on a flat bed tow truck and taken away.

Just joined a bit back on their forum... lots of activity and "rides" seems like a good group. I work for Toyota corporate and am getting my new Trails Team Edition in the next week or so... Thanks for the information!

As noted... I want to do my part in making sure that folks are not accessing areas they should not and not be mislead by others which may lead to access issues and trail damage.

I LOVE that car!!! So jealous. My roommate works at offroad evolution and Toyota gave them a brand new 08 FJ to fix up for shows....looked soooo cool.

Sorry this doesn't help you. Just had to share.

Oh... LOL.

I can't believe i was quoted on another forum. awesome

whats up boboso.. kudos on 'Moby'

Let me rephrase my original quote though:

If you stay on the Fire ROAD up until the sign, its Legal. Go off onto the side where there are some tricky off-camber stuff and its a ticket if your caught.
