Old man goin' downhill

He will be missed. When I started building wheels years ago it was because of him. I used to have the pics and directions he gave up all over the walls because they were super simple and if followed correctly you would have a strong, straight wheel. Granted there is more to it then just what he published but it is a very good place to start for just about anything mechanical on a bicycle.

Yes, it is a very sad day. Several years ago, he and I shared a bunch of e-mails while he was trying to collect data on bicycles standards on rec.bicycle.tech, or something like that. I was trying to help him fill in some of his tables to include a lot of stuff being used for DH bikes at the time. Although many accused him of being a retrogrouch, I believe just the opposite was true - although he had his areas of expertise, he truly wanted to know about all aspects of bicycling.
It was always entertaining and a pleasure to read the wheelbuilding banter and debates between him and Jobst Brandt. Sheldon was always an easy guy to have online conversations, and his general knowledge of obscure stuff goes unmatched. The world has lost a wealth of information, a legend, and a great guy. RIP. |

Suck on these

I have to agree with you lee, i actually spoke to him numerous times about my Rohloff hub, which there was no one else who knew 1/100th of what he knew about the hub. He was always helpful, pleasent, and interested in what bike I had it on and that I used it for DH. He will be greatly missed.

Holy smokes. This is so sad. I remember reading his articles over and over when I first got interested in bikes.
I'd been following his blog just read about how he was doing. It was amazing that despite losing so much physically he was still carrying on. Writing his blog, reviewing books and DVDs and trying to get out and see shows and events with his family. I hope all the best for his friends and family.

This is some very sad news. The only consolation I have is that I sent him an e-mail thanking him for his site last year.
