looks like it's well worth the trip.

good enough reason to build a rig to carry a 4 x 5, or at least ride with the D200!

Yes and it fits in nicely with a road trip to ride the Raindow Rim Trail. Couple days in Flag, stop Navajo Nation and on the the Grand Canyon, excellent idea for a road trip. There even a short ride along the rim near Page, AZ.

I went to Page AZ a few years ago to shoot the Antelope Canyons. There are two - Upper & Lower Canyons. The Canyons are actually "underground" therefore the best time would be around noon when the sun is above you. There are some areas where it can get dark. There are some things you can do to catch the sun light/rays coming through the slots. Pretty interesting place. Local indians are pretty friendly and helpful if you need anything.

One of the nicer shots of one of the most photographed desertscapes anywhere. Thanks for sharing that and good luck getting your chance at it.

Beautiful place. I recommend Lower Antelope Canyon for photography. Upper is usually really crowded and hard to work. Bring a tripod and be prepared for long exposures.

There is a pretty good MTB trail that circles Page also. Stop at the bike shop on the Main drag and they'll give you directions.

Like Dean said, great place to check on your way to the North Rim. I have only been in the lower canyon. You can easily get photog sensory overload in that place.

Anyone know how to get the light to punch through so strongly like in that first shot? Is that achieved through a longer exposure? Some kind of filter? That kind of light doesn't appear naturally that strongly. There's some trick photogs are doing. Any ideas?

No tricks. Correct time of day and correct exposure. No need for filters or anything out of the ordinary. I am positive the photog bumped up the contrast and made some level adjustments in photoshop afterwards.

That was my guess. And if you think about it, you only see really strong beams like that if the ambient light around it is low. So it must be a long enough exposure to bring a low background up to exposure, which overexposes the beam.

I like time lapse shots. Here's one that came out really well recently. Lit up the tree on the left with a headlamp! Very free form. Not a lick of photoshop.

There may still be a bunch of snow in the spring, best time to hit that area for MTBing is July-Sept. Let the monsoons green things up a bit. I plan on riding Flagstaff a lot more this summer. I am going to try a Amtrac trip out there with my bike to see how it works.

A Flag/Page/Rainbow Rim Camping trip is a excellent idea. This pic is in Flagstaff last September.
