notes from the weekend: the 4gb card has about 100 shots on it and the "counter" is still flashing "999". all the pics are there, but i guess the camera was made before memory cards could handle over 4 digits of data.

ok, so I was doing some rapid-shoot hold-the-shutter-and-go pics of our dogs, just to remember what it's like to use a real camera. it only would shoot about 5-8 frames before the memory card indicator light starts flashing (angrily) at me and it would take about 15 seconds to recover- is this due to the cheap/slow card that i've got or something else?

I should add that the first thing i did with the card was format it with the camera.

other than that, i'm a happy camper now- back to having a "real" camera!

The rebel was not made to work with a CF card over 2GB. So, it will probably never read properly on the screen. It should still work though but dont quote me on that you may experience problems as others have. I would stick with 2GB cards and you will still get hundreds per card which should be enough.

Also, if you are looking for a place to rent lenses go to Pro Photo Irvine. (http://www.prophotoconnection.com/) There website stinks but they are a great shop, really friendly people and have a good rental department. They also offer classes throughout the year and workshops.

You can just go with an Rebel XT / XTi, 8.0 MP, I am using one.. you can just buy sigma 27-70 mm .. f/2.8 around 380.00.. www.canogacamera.com, if you do not know what are you shooting, you can try to rent some lenses and see which fits your liking.

I use 4 Gb CF card on my Rebel XT.. it only reads upto 999.. but I never have any problem with it.. and after a couple thousand of pictures.. it starts to go down.. but if you use the large format then you will use up the memory on it specially when you use RAW format...

All normal behavior for a 300D. I have used 4GB cards with no problems in mine. It keeps showing 999 because that's the highest number it can show and (like I posted earlier) the 300D with a 4GB card should hold well over 1,200 large jpeg files. When you have a few hundred shots on the card, it will start to count down from 999 showing approximately how many shots are left.

Also, the buffer on the 300D with the first generation DiGiC processor will only let you knock out a handful of shots before it's all choked up and needs to take a short breather to write to the card.

In other words, it looks to me like it is working normally. Enjoy.

thanks- it's nice to finally have a real camera that can shoot fast shutter speeds with no shutter delay. also, getting to manual focus with one switch on the side of the lens is truly nice. I'll have to take some bike related pics soon and post them.
