You don't understand, I actually figured out and posted the hard answer (assuming they were all going to st. Ives. Yay reading comprehension for me.) And at the last last minute I realized the right answer.

I kept thinking about this while I slept last nite...thanks btw...we are all forgetting about the "legs" on the seats of the bus (4 legs per bench)....since there were only 7 girls am I to assume it's a "Short Bus" ?

Each packpack has 56 cats (8*7) or 224 legs.
49 backpacks = 49*224 = 10976
Add 14 girl's legs, answer = 10990
