Default i need help from computer geeks!

So i logged into my yahoo mail when i woke up around an hour ago, and i get two popups. one says you are infected with a trojan virus, and another saying click this to remove it. well, i wont click it because you have to buy it to make it work. what im asking, is there any way to delete trojan virus's without buying a virus protection..
we've always used trials and they work fine
and if you have to buy them.. whats the best one for windows XP?
Thanks in advance

go to mcafee and find the virus, they normally will have manual removal instructions.

How did you have a popup telling you that you've been infected by a trojan virus, if you didn't have antivirus software?

Chances are it's a bullshit internet popup. The programmers are getting pretty smart about disguising them.

Your best bet will be to install an Ad-Aware type program as well as an anti-virus program (or two, or three depending on how driven you are) and run them all. The scans will most likely pick up a lot of stuff that really doesn't affect your CPU much, but you'll be better off having run them.

Well, if you've recently downloaded any freeware the popup may have come "piggybacked" on that software.

It may be a harmless background program thats sole purpose is to tell you that you have a trojan installed and get you to click their link. That'd confirm your IP address as active and add you to the programmer's target list for further attention.

Or you could actually be infected with a Trojan. Any virus you have will have been downloaded with a program or e-mail attachment.

How often does the popup appear? Every few minutes on your desktop? just when you log into windows?

Something as in a program? internet link? desktop icon?

next time it pops up, check your task manager and see if a program is running that you don't have open. i'd also check your windows registry. there may be some programs there you didn't install

it probably installed when you clicked "ok" on a bogus window and it installed something and keeps popping up....

Scan with AdAware and Spybot Seek and Destroy.... also Microsofts free Windows Defender works pretty good too...

You have some sort of malware or spyware. has nothing to do with your yahoo web mail. get AVG the free one is fine and ccleaner. i've tested it a few times and it works better than ad-aware and spybot. don't worry if your anti-virus comes up with nothing it sounds like spyware. so ccleaner should take care of it.

oh, make sure you have all your xp updates and updates for your web browser.
