Once my gloves get up and start walking away on their own, it's time to wash them.

I try to wash shorts & jerseys after each ride...but there have a few times when I've caught *ridin' dirty*. Is it possible to smell even worse after 20 miles?

My wife usually meets me on the front lawn with the hose & a bar of Lava soap. Even the dog won't come near me sometimes.

You could always do what BrewMaster did yesterday and put about a half a can of Axe on.

Helmet and backpack straps are pretty hard to wash but the salt from sweat will eventually cause them to perish

My backpack is black and you can see the salt all around the shoulder straps. I guess the only thing to do to prolong the life of the straps is to wipe them down with something like rubbing alcohol or a mild detergent

I wash my camel in the washing machine with my gloves and then hang dry it. Seems to work great and gets all the salt out.

For clothes and padded shorts I use cold water wash with detergent, add baking soda to wash AND rinse cycle. Adding baking soda to rinse cycle helps remove the stink!

I hand wash my gloves, armor, and pack. You can soak large items like the pack in a bathtub.

Definitely HANG DRY all your bike clothes/gear - the dryer heat is hard on fabrics.

No fabric softener either, I've been told that it badly affects wicking fabrics over time.

The helmet gets thrown in the dishwasher while everything else is tossed in the washer then air dried.

It wears off too quickly to make it worth it. By the way, my wife apologizes for me for the Axe incident. I, on the other hand, make no apologies.

I wash my helmet by taking it in the shower and washing it with shampoo, particularly the chin straps. It's worked well so far.

I don't know if it was Brew, but there was some serious backwash wafting down the trail last night!

Considering the two options with your dog - jumping all over you, or running 1.3 million mph in the other direction until he's 12 states away and you have to issue an Amber Alert - I'd say you ought to wash your stuff often.

Several people have mentioned using baking soda, now do I add that IN ADDITION to the liquid gentle laundry detergent or INSTEAD OF (JUST use baking soda)???

I am super lazy when it comes to laundry so no hand washing for me, I'm gonna do a cold load on gentle cycle... just need help with what solutions (ie detergent and/or baking soda) to use???

Haha, quick replies will be appreciated since I plan to start the load ASAP and hope everything will be dried before I ride tomorrow evening =)

TIA!

i found that a diluted solution of denatured rubbing alcohol does the job in killing the stench emanating from your helmet straps and pads
