Default The Ride - Chapter 13 Say it ain't so!

Glen slipped out of bed and padded over to the dresser. The hardwood floor was cold to the touch of his feet. He liked that. It kept him grounded. He knew where he was. He was walking across a cold hardwood floor in a bedroom of a house that seemed to be his but, in reality, wasn’t. Even the woman in the bed wasn’t really his…. or was she? He quickly glanced over at the familiar sleeping form of Sandy. She hadn’t moved when he had gotten up. His Sandy had always been aware when he had gotten out of bed. This one hadn’t even stirred. Strange… alike in many ways, she had proved that in their frantic lovemaking earlier… but somehow different too. Sandy #2, as he had started thinking of her, was more guarded. He saw flashes of the same Sandy he knew and loved, but this one seemed…damaged? From Glen #2? He needed to spend a lot more time with her.

He thought all of this as he picked up the now glowing brown plastic Boy Scout flashlight with a compass in the handle. Glen couldn’t deny it. It was softly glowing and somewhat warm to the touch. In fact, he could feel a slight vibration as he held it in his hand. He flicked it on and Glen half expected to be somehow transported into another time and place. But all that happened was a beam of light shot out into the darken bedroom, illuminating the bedroom door.

Glen almost started to laugh at himself when he heard the slightest sound coming from the hallway outside. It sounded like a scratching sound coming up the stairs from other side of the closed door. The hair on the back of Glen’s neck stood up. He stood very still and listened. But the scratching had stopped and all But the scratching had stopped and all Glen could hear was the beating of his own heart. Had he imagined the noise? He didn’t think so.

Glen quickly crossed to the door and was about to fling it open when the door handle began to turn ever so slowly. This can’t be happening, Glen thought and his imagination took flight. He glanced down and noticed that a small amount of light was coming from under the door and in that light was a large shadow that moved. Thank God for the dead bolt he had installed on the door, Glen thought. He had installed it many years ago for his Sandy to make her feel safe at night. The handle had now reached its limits and the door suddenly bowed inward as though a great weight had been placed against it.

Glen jumped back, still holding the flashlight. Somehow the door had held, but he knew that another push like that and it would collapse inward, bringing whatever was on the other side into the bedroom with him and Sandy #2.Spinning on the balls of his feet he ran to the bed and in one motion, nudged Sandy with the flashlight with his left hand and grabbed the ugly little pistol that he had left on the nightstand with his right. The same ugly little weapon that Sandy #2 had used to blow a big hole in Glen #2s head. Both the pistol and the flashlight came up together and were now pointed at the door. But somehow that didn’t make Glen feel any better.

Sandy immediately came awake and was looking into Glen’s face for an explanation… that is until she saw the gun pointed away from her towards the door. She sprang out of bed next to him as the door heaved inwards a second time. He would have never thought it would hold… but it did. This time however, the bedroom was filled with an unearthly sound coming from the other side of the door. The hair stood up again on his neck. Glen didn’t know what it was; only that it sounded ….mad? … No that didn’t describe it… Angry? ... Frustrated? ... Savage?... Demonic? …Yeah, he was getting closer.

It suddenly became crystal clear to Glen; he did not want to meet whatever was trying to get into the bedroom…ever! Sandy, to her credit had gotten up and was scoping up her clothes and running to the bathroom door. Glen didn’t waste another minute following her. Transferring the flashlight to his right hand along with the small weapon, he picked up his clothes and shoes up his shoes and ran towards the bathroom door. Another angry howl shattered the stillness as he literally dove through the bathroom door.

Sandy slammed the door just as the bedroom door gave up its last life and crashed inward with the sounds of splintering wood. A roar of triumph followed then silence. Glen frantically looked around for something to put in front of the door, but then realized that it was a waste of time and time was running out for them.

Sandy crossed the bathroom to the small window and lifted it up, throwing her clothes in front of her, stepping on the hamper she climbed through and motioned Glen to follow. Glen didn’t want to turn his back on the bathroom door yet needed to in order to get through the window.

It was the longest 15 seconds of his life. But somehow he made it through turned and looked back through the window toward the door. He realized that they must have looked ridiculous to any neighbor that happened to be looking out their window. A nude man and a woman climbing out of a 2nd story bathroom window with a gun and a flashlight. Probably thought they were either burglars or crazy and were calling the police right now. They better bring BIG guns with them if they come, Glen thought.

But he didn’t have time for such speculation. He had other things that were taking up all his attention right now. Like what in the hell had made that God awful noise? It had chilled him to the bone. It had sounded big… no, make that BIG! There was nothing but silence now. The gun and the flashlight were trained on the door and Glen noticed that the beam of light was shaking slightly. He steadied it on the window frame and cocked the pistol. Let it come, what ever it was…

He was now ready.

I'm just wondering where this book will be classified if it gets printed. Imagine going to Barnes and Nobles, you won't know what section to find tis book in. Sci Fi... Suspense... Sports... maybe in the biography section.

Won't be in Dirt Rag.... maybe some place else...who knows? I'd have to do a lot more fleshing out of the characters ... instead of the mostly action with twist endings ... it's a lot of fun to write as you are only limited by your imagination.

Thanks, Ethan ....
