I personally use http://order.1and1.com/xml/order/Hos...op&__lf=Static
$4.99 for 2 domains, 120 Gb of web space, 1200 email accounts, 10 FTP accounts, 1,200 Gb monthly transfer volume. For what I need (and probably you), it offers plenty of space and bandwidth.

They have templates galore to help you setup whatever you want. Or you can choose to bypass all that and do your own with HTML or whatever else you'd prefer to use. Not the best in customer service but you get what you pay for. A lot of better hosting companies who also charge a lot more money. Godaddy.com is another option.

Mine is kind of expensive-
25 a month/ 7.00 to register the Domain- However- I have the owner's IM screen name- When I need anything coded, that I can't code (PHP/STML/Html/Database creations)- I tell him what I want the website to do and he does it. It's thorough LeasedMinds.com. I teach a hybrid film study class- the theory is presented on-line, the practium is in the classroom- My server dudes really help creating and maintaing the database for the class- mrtawney.com

In order to get a round our "Lunch Club" IT dept, I've had very good luck using Google for Document storage and Flickr for pictures. On either resource you can send out invites to see or collaborate on what you post. Free, easy and not difficult at all.

That's a tough question, as everyone has their own needs and ideas on how to accomplish them. In my opinion, it's good to get your own domain. That way you're not at the mercy of some company that can change its policies on a whim. You'll also have the ability to use a host that is fast. A downside of free photo hosting sites is that they're often as slow as molasses. But then, a domain and hosting costs money.
For my personal pictures, I like to use a format such as this: http://engines.rustyiron.com/santee04/index.html This is all coded by hand and is not particularly difficult, but you have to be a bit of a techno-geek to do it. For allowing others to upload images to a website, some type of program must be run on the server. The one I use is free and it's fairly simple to set up. You can check it out here: http://wapa.us/gallery For hosting, I strongly recommend these folks: http://www.100megswebhosting.com/services/shared.php |
