Default Mac peeps: a RAM question

ok, so my G4 tower is running damn slow- we've got something like 5 years worth of photographs in iPhoto and it's damn frustrating.

so, what do I do? what's the type of RAM that i need to get to get my machine back up to speed?

FWIW, it's a stock G4 tower from the early daze w/ the 20x super drive. I wish i knew more about it (model number, etc) to get help, but i figured y'all would be able to help me.

edit: its a G4 with mirrored doors, if that helps....

I have a G4Pbook with 1.25gig of RAM

Perhaps you have to jack yours up a bit!

The first thing I would do is get all those photos off the main drive and buy an external drive,

What OS are you running, Leopard? and how much Ram do you have

we've been thinking of offloading everything to the external.

not a clue on the OS- not the latest, but the one before (jaguar?) came in a black box with a big damn silver "X" on it....

edit: is there some sort of marking on the existing ram module that states its speed?

The chip merchant usually has the lowest prices and it’s in San Diego, Give them a call and they will let you know the type of RAM you need

A little more info would help.

Top upper left corner of monitor- click the APPLE symbol followed by ABOUT THIS MAC. From there we can figure something out!

Truth be told, the new iMacs are light years faster than your machine. Refurb 17" iMacs can be had for as little as $849. Something to think about!

To find the information about your Mac go to the Apple symbol on the menu bar and go to “About This Mac”, it should give you all the info you need to know.

Great minds think alike!
EDIT: The reason I beat you by a second: All DW-LINK bikes come equipped with T1 lines!

"a bunch of pics" is an understatement- try 8,200 or so.

I use RAM Seeker to comparison shop for the best deals on memory. Use the pull-down menu at the top to select your computer model.

I gotta admit that iPhoto is somewhat disappointing coming from Apple. And yes - it is kind of slow. I wish there was a Picassa version for the Mac.

in general or the latest version? I was thinking of upgrading to the latest OS, but have found little reason to do so- all of the extra bells n whistles just arent needed for what we do around here (web surfing, basic photo editing, itunes, and your basic Office needs)

In general, really. It's still a pretty sweet app with all the easy editing and touch-up stuff; it's just kind of slow.

I find spaces to be VERY useful since I multitask a lot at work. It might not be a big deal for you though. There's a ton of little improvements on a lot of things. If you ever wanted a nice backup solution then it might be worth it for time machine.

If not for the two $100 store credit from apple i wouldn't buy Leopard. I do use Spaces.
I hope you find your RAM for your Mac. Prices have gown down quite a bit, i may jump my iMac's ram to 3 gig, saw some good prices for a stick of 2 gig at OWC.

the thing that really disappointed me about Leopard is the inability to use an external HDD connected to airport extreme to do a time machine backup on.
