I went through a Stout phase and loved it[Lost Coast Breweries 8-Ball Stout, Weihenstephaner Korbinian(quite possibly the greatest stout I have ever drank), Etc.], then I went to Belgian beers[Delirium Nocturnum, Kwak, Biere du Boucanier, Etc.(I prefer to call them gifts from God). Although, in the past few months I have started to acquire a taste for Hoppy beers. Recently I had Green Flash Breweries Imperial IPA and all I can say is WOW. It is the shiznit. I know it's not a stout or porter but it is absolutely outstanding and from a local brewery to boot. Later.

Must... have. Thanks for the BR. I don't think I've ever had a Scandinavian stout. I wonder, are there many available state side?

Someone told me that Green Flash is owned by Stone, but Google wasn't helpful. Anyone know if there's any truth to that?

I've been in the stout "phase" for all of my drinkin' life, yet I've never heard of the Weihenstephaner Korbinian. Been through the hoppies and the Belgians, but a stoutman am I. Thanks for finding me a new one.

Weihenstephaner Korbinian, a great classic German beer is actually a Doppelbock. But it's dark enough and rich enough in flavor to be considered a stout. Food for thought, they still voluntarily follow Reinheitsgebot(the first food law stating that beer can only contain water, barley, hops, and yeast), all Weihenstephaner beers are absolutely ridiculously good and it is the oldest brewery in the world, since 1040 AD, that's a long freakin' time to be perfecting your beer recipe.

if you ever want to stay really local(in SD) got to Oggi's and have a Black Magic Stout, or if you are Hop-Inclined have some Hop Juice(very close to Green Flash's Imperial IPA), a strong IPA(or beer for that matter) by any standards at 9.4%. Later.

Well, doppelbocks are lagers while stouts are ales. They are not interchangeable.

No, Green Flash is not owned by Stone. Stone distributes Green Flash beer though.

I think he was referring to the way the brew tastes, not the way it was made. A technical error, but I'd forgive it. IMHO, some Dopplebocks really do taste a lot like stouts.

However, Dopplebocks are worthy of their our thread...

I wasn't saying that Korbinian was actually a Stout, but to most taste buds it will appear that way, and as a plus it will lead people over to the "belgian style" beers(hey that's where it lead me), if you want doppels you can't argue with the belgians, let's call it a gateway beer. Later.

To me stouts and doppelbocks taste very different, but are both good in their own ways. Doppelbocks do serve as a way to lead people to a broader beer horizon, which is a beautiful thing.
