Default Brings a tear...

As I was taking my boys to school this morning, I decided to ask if there was anything they forgot to put down on their Christmas wish lists, and when my younger son (10yrs) uttered that he wanted a new Mt Bike and forgot to write it down, I swear I just about wept. I held back, but I almost gave up the goods that for his birthday, I will be building him up a new mt bike (not sure which frame yet though). If I had realized how bad he wanted one for Christmas I would have bought less of all the other crap, and concentrated on the bike...oh well, his b-day is in April so he won't be waiting too long.

Thats my boy!

All that other stuff back and start building

Kona frames are nice and can be built up light. I will try and dig up a pic of the bike I built for my son.

26" wheels right? It is much harder to find nice light 24" wheeled stuff.

Yeah, show me your sons build, I'd like to see which direction you went with it. I'm going 26" on it as he is used to riding a 26" mt bike as it is, it's just not "his own". He really wants a full susser, so If I can get a great deal on a frame I'm going to go that route, but of course I need to get the great deal and have the funds for it. Jenson and WheelWorld usually have some blowout prices on small frames they've had around for YEARS.
I'm obviously not going to be putting high end parts on the bike, but they will be wisely chosen, he will bash, crash, and outgrow this, so it will need to be reliable, no probs there, I have plenty of spare stuff to get the bike going that will most likely last until he out grows it.
I'm so jazzed!

I don't suppose he'll take a rain check on other presents for say 2 years?

look for the pics. We went with a HT. Maybe buy him the frame for Xmas and then have him do extra chores around the house to pay for the parts. Finish it up for his b-day.

I purchased a new small Kona HT from The Path cheap. Then looked around for deals and did a mix of new and used stuff. Ended up building up a bike that was lighter and cheaper than anything I could have purchased new. Then when he out grows the frame we can get a bigger one and switch all the parts over.

Well, it looks like my boy will be getting a Giant Trance2 '06. If they still have them in a couple months.

He is going to be so stoked. I think I will have him involved in the build process. I can't wait!

I started my son when he was 9 on an XS Specialized Hardrock. I figured 26" wheels were the only way to go. Now he's on a 6" travel KHS AM1000. I got the frame for $300 and swapped the HT's parts over. Thing weighs like 31 lbs and he only weighs 95 lbs. Imagine riding a bike that was a third of your body weight. He kills it though.

I'll say--

Mark is on an '06 Trance 2 there. I'm pretty sure that's the same frame you got for your son. Wheel World, right?

He'll be 12 next month. Those pics were from this past August. He got the KHS this past Spring. He was on the HT for a couple years. As soon as he hits puberty and gets some muscle, I'm screwed.
