Has anyone else heard of this?
www.laderapower.com I live there and had no idea anything like this was even being considered in the area until I got a flyer from some guys this weekend. With hardly any publicity and notification, construction was supposed to begin in January 2008. Sounds like it's been put on hold for the moment. Not sure how many of you would be affected by this, but thought I'd share. I know there is the old fire road right there off Antonio that some like to ride... |

Peaker plants are almost always natural gas, which burns very cleanly compared to coal, for example.
But since they're designed to deal with peak demand (to prevent black-outs) they also have less restrictions on emissions compared to baseload (or regular) natural gas plants. Not sure how I feel about it. No one wants power plants nearby but everyone wants and needs power too. It's the age old dilemma. But the bottom line is if there wasn't enough public notice, that's just bad business and bad community relations -- not to mention probably against the law. |

my theory is on this is that they were going through the process long before Ladera was being built out and I'm pretty sure the Mission Viejo Ranch knew about it. I'm sure the timeline to get something approved is very long and chalked full of red tape that it wasnt reviewed and approved overnight. Is it true that this is going to be on an existing plant and converted to a peak plant?
I feel for you but like others here, we all consume power moreso than ever nowadays; hell this post wouldnt be possible if it wasn't for this. But I urge everyone that is looking to buy a house to do your due diligence and research the area...look at the zoning maps and what is proposed or slated for future development. I'm involved in urban planning and I can tell you how many times I hear some residents say "i never knew about this...etc etc" when it probably has but you probably didnt hear about it till it is ready to "break ground"

i'd be curious to find out when they applied for this at a local level and at the CPUC as i'm sure the CPUC had hearings about this sucker.

It must have been approved since 2006 since it's not on this map which shows existing, but also approved plants

I'm not trying to point fingers here, but I've heard about it several times up in North OC. Here's a small excerpt:
Many residents at the meetings and on area websites accused SDG&E of keeping the project a secret so as to "sneak it past the public," as one resident put it, but plans for the peaker power plant have been widely communicated in the Orange County Register, the Ladera Times, and the Ladera Post newspapers, on the LaderaPortal, LaderLife, and LaderaTimes.com websites, and in an email blast to residents who are registered on LaderaLife. In addition, several public meetings have been held prior to today. From August: http://www.downontheranch.info/2007/...ar-ladera.html I only mention this to second foofighters' point of doing "your" homework. Our little community is going through the mess with the Aera Energy/Diamond Bar/City of Industry development in the hills behind Brea. Those familiar with the Fully Loop have no doubt heard of the Coyote Hills snafu. A word to the wise is sufficient.

which I guess would of been a Mission Nuevo first? No kidding when we were kids there was talk of the Irvine Co selling some land to developers to build a small city. A few years later there was a small community that folks made fun of, the cookie cutter homes that people said they'd never live in,HA!

The oil field owners (Shell/Texaco, aka Aera Energy) are trying to develop the land just outside the sphere of influence of the City of Brea. There's a fair amount of NIMBY going on. The main concern is the disruption of a major wildlife corridor that is 80% complete and currently runs through several cities. There's a LOT more here:

Sounds like it's been put on hold for the moment.
