Which way did he go?

I was trying get my itinerary set for my trip this morning and I was looking at the NOAA web forecast for this weekend. They're forcasting up to 6-8 inches of SNOW to fall at the resort level of Big Bear. (6,000- 7,500 ft level)
I made a call to a contact at Bear Valley Resort and they're expecting to start getting snow either late Thursday night to early Friday morning.

If you're lucky! Last weekend, it rained for 24 hours straight and as soon as the temp dropped, it stopped. No snow. :-(

They're actually expecting 8"+ snow in Big Bear???
Must be some bizarre weather phenomenon that happens once every 100 years. I've had my gear waxed, tuned, and ready to rock since april. I'm looking to head up there probably Saturday. I'm hoping that the blizzard will still be in full swing then to keep the crowds down and the chain restrictions in effect. It makes for "fun" driving and uncrowded slopes. Everyone and they're uncle is up there when it does snow. It's kind of annoying how people flock up there for just a few inches of white stuff. I realized the irony of me being one of those people. Granted, it's still way more convenient than driving the 5+ hours to mammoth. I guess I got spoiled living in the northwest where it dumps nearly every day in the Cascades and people there try to stay OUT of the snow and cold. |

I might be willing to organize this since I am probably more addicted to snow than anyone else here. (The first step in recovery is admitting that you have a problem.) Anyone have a preference of where to do the STR snow day? Snow Summit? Mtn High? Bear Mountain? Snow Valley?... Baldy, perhaps? Or would people want to go bigger like a weekend at Mammoth or June Mountain? June usually has some killer deals on lodging and tickets plus it doesn't have the crowds or high winds that mammoth usually has. The down side is that there is virtually zero night life at June. |

I'm in for an STR snow day or weekend. Locally SnowSummit on Sun, Feb 10 cuz I get to ski free (B-day).
I won't do Mammoth for just 2 days due to being in a coffin for 8 hours each way. But Feb 23 - Mar 1 I'll be in CO.![]() No Mt Baldy either... |

Since moving to SoCal in 2004, I've found Summit is the only local place w/ consistant conditions & enough terrain to keep me happy for an entire day. (I don't board, so I don't do Big Bear). They know this too and charge accordingly. Everyone else in SoCal knows this to so the parking lot fills early then pack the slopes.
Everything else in SoCal is hit & miss. The next best place is Snow Valley (near Running Springs) and on a couple occassions after immedately after dumps I skiied 6+" dry powder since they're a little higher up than Snow Summit (which usually starts w/ rain -> then freezing rain -> then snow) But after a few hours, I'm done Valley's terrain. I learned my lesson the first time at Mt Baldy (and this was after the 8' dump in 2004) but it took me 3x at Mt. High (East) not to go back. If Mammoth was another hour from SD, I'd be going to Tahoe or to another state. Sorry, I'm off my soap box now... |

Summit for us (1X1Clyde, Surlygal & Maddie), we've all got season passes, dual mtn, but belive me Summit is a better choice of the 2.
Stinky - you and are have something in common other than bikes! I too have admitted my addiction to snow! Anyhow - as we had dicussed in a previous thread - Let's wait until the runs are really open. This weekend will help - but in between cold spells it's 70 today up there. Late Jan or Feb would be good. Don't forget there are a few mtn bike races in those months too. Let's plan ahead enough that most everyone can make it... I'll be at Summit this weekend, leaving Friday at noon trying to get ahead of the storm followers and dlhers. Chains will be needed this weekend. Snow's supposed to start tomorrow night. See everyone on the snow!
