Oil looks like it will break $100/bbl this week. I know many of the people on this board drive many miles each way to ride trails. I was curious to know if this event would change any of that.

I have a built in advantage because of where I live. I can drive 15 minutes and be in Big Bear.
The crap part will be going up and down the hill for work. I'm already trying to use the Metro from San Bernardino to Riverside and riding to work from the train station.

Sure will make me "think" about it - driving to further rides. Its already (that and nightmare traffic) a reason why, living in WLA, I don't ride OC / SD more often.
I was threatening to start riding to work when gas hit $3, but needing to be at work by 6am, took some of the wind out of my sails. BUT, with $4 looming, maybe its time to put some slicks on the old HT, bundle up (at 5:30am!!!) and ride to work... maybe Tues / Wed / Thurs? The funny part is, my company (investment management / stock trading) gets richer the more gas goes up. Of course I don't see any money directly - being a lowly IT guy. The rich really do get richer, trust me. A little toy one of our top exec recently picked up. |

i think i'm jealous. i have to say for myself it's going to affected me pretty bad. basically i drive for a living and filling up my truck every other day is kind of a pain. then you add on filling up on the weekends because i have to drive to dh it could get kind of expensive . so i'll probally be doing more trail riding at my local trails where i don't have to drive as far. |

Nope, or drive for that matter. I need my truck to get around so I'll keep sucking up the gas to use it and if I have to use a tank for a weekend trip so be it.

wont change my weekend/racing riding plans, but would definitely effect our daily driving. i will commute more, and will start as soon as we plan a safe route in the dark. lately, i've seen waaaaay to many a-hole drivers talking on a phone and driving in the bike lane. this bothers me.
commute safe, people. as lame as it is, i wear a bright neon pearl izumi vest. but if it helps, then i'll dress like a recumbent rider. |

It won't much change my habits since I work from home, but it will have me thinking twice about taking longer trips on weekends.
For the rest of LA, I hope it gets a few more people out bike commuting. I just got back from a work trip to Denmark and it was a real eye opener to see how many people bike commute over there (photo). Cars there are super expensive (300% tax) and the gas is very expensive so tons of people commute by bike. It's cool to see. Because LA is more spread out, it not necessarily as practical as in some European cities, but for shorter commutes, it's fine. And it doesn't rain here, and it's mostly flat. But...I think if gas hits $4/gallon it's just going to be more money out of everyone's pocket. Just more erosion of America's once-mighty stability and stature in the world. |
