I'm still searching for the right 4wheeler/ daily driver. Looking like it will be either a XJ or YJ, since i cant afford maintainence on a Range Rover.
Speaking of which... I also have a '03 Nissan Frontier for sale. 64,000 mi, 5spd, bedliner... PM for more detail. |

The 4.0L Chrysler engine will go 300,000 miles if you take care of it. Just change the oil like you're supposed to, and take good care of the cooling system (don't let the engine get hot). Plus, if you gear the truck right, you'll get good mileage. You can also build a killer stroker motor by using the AMC 4.2L (258 c.i.) crank in the 4.0L block. This bumps you up to around 4.6L or 4.7L. I had a '90 XJ, and am still amazed at what those things could do in stock form. Use good springs in your lift, and then it will really go through the rocks. Back when I had my XJ, the stock front springs were roughly 18" uncompressed. The 3" lift Rancho springs were also roughly 18". How do you think you got your lift? By having a stupid high spring rate that wouldn't flex and rattled your teeth. Do a good job researching your springs. Also, I believe the last year of the high pinion (reverse cut) front diff was '99, so if I were doing it over again, I'd probably avoid the '00 or '01. One thing I dont like about the XJ, is the uni-body construction. When you have the axles really flexed out, the body tweaks with the "frame". Cracks can form near the lift gate hinges. It's not that big of a deal really, but it was something that I would fret over.

lol! I was just in the same boat! I was between a Disco or an XJ/WJ/ZJ. I ended up buying a 2001 XJ. Best combination of price, utility, space, and off road capability. Discos are cute if your'e a soccer mom that doesn't mind driving the vehicle with the WORST resale value on the planet, but if you want to modify it, expect to take out a 2nd mortgage! If you get an XJ, make sure you sign up an naxja.org!
