I cant speak about the locking up issue, but IMHO, I would go get some good hubs like Hope Bulbs(If you dont wanna drop the $$ for King) and go find a good solid hoop and have a set of wheels built... Probably can get the whole deal cheaper than the $650 or so that Price Point has the DeeMaxs listed for....

Screw deemax. Go I-9 or like Neccros said a set of Hopes laced to a solid rim (like Atomlabs )

Is tubeless a priority for you? The other option would be a set of Hopes or Hadleys laced to Mavic 823s, very nice indeed.

Reviews on MTBR are so so. They're not yellow anymore, says one. And they are a pain to mount tires unless you're going tubeless, says another.

I have the yellow Dee Max rims, I got them from a friend who only rode them for about a month. I have no issues with them at all. I was also able to make a couple of payments to him for the rims, so it wasn't such a bite out of my wallet at once. I like them alright... If you are not into the color of the rims them why get them? They (Mavic) also have the Dee-Trax rims for a lot cheaper. They also come with a warrenty program, so that is something you could look into. BTW, the Dee-Trax are black. So that might be more of the color you are looking for.

Some people say they have to get the rear hub looked at now and them because it starts to wiggle a bit. I have not experianced that at all. My wheelset is a no-brainer for me. I never have to worry about them at all. I dig the color a lot too....I am pretty sure that the '05 version of the rims are silver, so that brings in another option. Here is my bike:

i looked at the deetracks.
theyre like 350$ versions of the deemax rims

but every single review i read on them said they lock up after every 3 or so rides

well i think for now im sticking with the ones i have.
they should last me until i can affor new ones even though i could probably use the mavic d321
