Default Mountain bike shoes

Anybody ever buy the Forte brand (Performance Bike's house brand) of mountain bike shoes? I buy their tubes and tires and they're okay. They get the job done but they're not fancy (although I'm beginning to think the tubes might be not as good as I'd like).

Anyway, I am looking at getting a new pair of mountain biking shoes. I've been wearing my Specialized shoes since I started riding over a year ago. The only complaint I have with them is that the soles are getting worn down from hike and pushabiking. So, I want shoes that are comfortable, have at least three straps (velcro or whatever) and have good soles.

But, I don't want to spend $250 on a pair of Sidi Dominators. I think that's just overkill for me. I'd rather spend about $100 or less on a pair of shoes and take that other $150 and buy something else I need.

So, whaddaya think?

Check out the Shimano M-121's. They're decent and pretty affordable. ($95) But they allso have the M-225's that are a little more(like $150) but they have steel hiking "spikes" at the front for push-a-biking. Try 'em on and see how they feel...

Also look at the $85.00 Pearl Izumi Vagabond M4, nylon sole is superstiff and vents well too.

How about these...
http://www.nashbar.com/profile.cfm?s...64&PID=1204522

They are super stiff, so it might be a bit more than you are looking for, but they are great shoes.

They only come in wide though because it last year's model.

I like the Vagabonds and am considering those. The 225's are a bit more shoe than I am looking for but the 121's have promise. I like how comfy those 661's look but they've got laces and me no likey laces. I like velcro 'cause it's fast to adjust and doesn't move once it's in place. Or so it's been so far.

Don't buy the forte shoes. For 80 bucks you cant go wrong with the pearl izumis. The performance brand tubes work fine(stick with the standard ones and not the ultra/lunar lites) but i would never use their tires for any real trail riding. Every tuesday from 12-2 there is an additional 10% off all items in the store. Word.

I only use the Forte City Slick tires (with Kevlar) on my commuter. I've only gotten a couple flats. Both times it was because of either metal or glass that would have punctured any tire. I've been pretty pleased with the tires, especially because they come in the 1.25 width and they're only $11 a piece. Can't beat that with a stick!!!

I own a pair of Supergo shoes (older model) They arent stylish but I have had them for 2 years and they still work fine. They are the 3 velcro strap version with toe spikes.
I also own a pair of shimano mt-20s. They are ok for weekend warrior type riding or rides where you will walk quite a bit, for any long range or communter type riding the soles are way too flexy

I don't know what size your feet are but this is interesting

I have an early version of the Shimano M121 (M151?). Like you, I wanted 3 straps. I also didn't want a buckle or a carbon sole.
They have been pretty great. Fit well (a little narrow though), stay on through hike a bikes, and have been very durable. Along with the normal riding wear and tear, they have been completely submerged multiple times, scraped, scuffed, etc. and are only now starting to have the stitching unravel This is after about three years on them. My model has the steel hike spikes also.
I got a deal on 'last year's model' for about $65.
I am a big believer in buying 'last year's model' when it comes to bike parts/gear, if possible. IMO technology just doesn't change that much from year to year.
I just got a pair of new, non-buckle '04 Sidis for $50 from Nashbar a couple of weeks ago. The close out deals are out there.

if your riding as much as you are, i think buying a 200 sidi is worth every penny. I tried those and they are comfortable as hell.

Be careful on the shoes you do buy. Try them on and if you think you still need a bigger discount then by online, but for shoes I'd go to my LBS. Sidi's did not work for me. I tried 3 different types and all were close to 200 bucks. Usually only lasted a year or a little more.

I was thinking of cruising by Jenson's. I'm going to look really closely at the Pearl Izumi's. It seems like for every rave about Sidi's that I hear, I also hear someone who hates them.

I wish more places carried the Specialized shoes. Incycle does, I think. Their Sport model has been good and still looks decent. I don't think Jenson's carries the Spec'd shoes. But, they have Lake and Answer. Lots of those. Right now, though, the Pearl Izumi Vagabonds look like the ones, assuming they feel good.

My last pair of Sidi's lasted 4 years until the top strap finally broke. $225 is a lot of change to drop on shoes but they were by far the most comfortable xc type shoes I've owned.
