Default Need a decent low-budget FS bike for the G/F...

Hey gang,

I'm on the hunt for a bike so I can get my girl into the whole MTB thing!

She's about 5'6"...this kinda seems like she's on the border of a Small or Medium frame, right? I really have no idea what size to get her!

Anyway, if anyone here has a low-budget bike that would be a good starter rig that would fit a 5'6" female rider, please let me know! Thanks!

I've got a SS for sale - $45 OBO. I've finally realised how badly they suck, from now on I'm not even looking at a bike unless it has full suspension, a road cassette on the back and at least 8" of travel at each end.
In fact I'm going to reverse my car over the SS tomorrow morning and burn the remains - I've seen the light!

I just finished a build, but it's not for sale. What I am doing is a budget build with all the parts I have left over from this recent build. I just need a frame. F/S or hardtail, which would she prefer? She'll need about a 15"/16"(small). Even a 17" is concidered a small by some manufacturers, At 5'6" it would be too big for her in my oppinion. A medium would out of the question. They do make a WSD(womans specific design). Same height, shorter top tube.

If you can, err to the smaller side. It's easier to set the bike up with componets to adjust for size if the frame is to small versus trying to reduce the size. I've found some of the best deals for bikes to be on Craigslist and even the recycler. If you want to get a new bike cheap, you can get the Giant line at a pretty good deal. I also like my sons Gary Fisher that I paid 400 bucks for, but it's a ht.

For used, also check mtbr.com classifieds, along with eBay & Craigslist. For new, check some of the closeout deals that Wheel World has on '06 Giants & Konas. They have some great bargains on very good bikes.

I have a Marin East Peak in 15.5" (small). It's an 04 and has an Axel fork and a Float R in back. I'm asking $450 for it. If that sounds like what you may be looking for and it's in your budget, please let me know. The bike looks like this except it currently has a THE saddle, WTB tires, and no pedals.

That Marin is a good deal. And a great entry level bike. I rode one on a demo day up at Sea Otter and did the full race course on it and was very happy with it. The guys back at the Marin truck weren't to happy as I was still slow and I was gone quite a while. Nobody told me when I had to have it back.

I would glady give the bike away for $45 but I've chained the frame to the back of the Civic and have lost the key. What I really want is a Stumpjumper Expert in Red with some Crossmax wheels, they really are the bomb. And I want a British accent too because Americans sound lame.

Thanks for the advice on size!

I'll see what Shinken has up for grabs.

That Marin doesn't look bad, I'll hit up the taco man too. Thanks again!
