Default XC Wheels?

I'm breaking spokes every week and need a new set of wheels. I'm looking at the CrossMax XL's. (Jenson has them cheap)

Does anyone have any other wheels they would recommend?

Thanx

No recomendations except stay away from machine built wheels (cheap). Have someone good lace you up a set.

Good wheels make such a big difference...don't skimp on them.

What is your budget, what bike are they going on and what's your riding style?

You'll get better responses with this info.

Bike...LiteSpeed Niota, XC bike
Style...technically challenged .

I'm literally popping spokes every week though on my back wheel. Not sure if I wanna get something quick or wait on an order. Hmmmm...I'll call them tomorrow.

Thanks again.

If your rim is in good shape, just re-lacing a new set of spokes is very inexpensive. A full set of spokes and nipples at any LBS should not run you more than $25.00 per wheel for the parts.

Just get new spokes and nipples, and I can lace it up for 6 pack of brew.

I was told by my LBS that the reason for the spokes breaking has something to do with rim tension and I'll need a new rim as well . I was looking to upgrade my wheels so this is kinda a good excuse .

Thanks for the offer.

How much do you weigh? DT Swiss 4.1 rims with hope pro II or bulb hubs might be a good idea. I got my 4.1/bulb wheels for $550 from Chad at Red Barn.

Crossmax wheels have very poor freehubs. The pawls wear our pretty quick. For the price you are looking at spending.....get your self a nice set of custom wheels built.

I have a set of DT 240's laced up to an old set of Mavic 217's and have no issues...and they are light.

Ah - I remember you from the Blackstar ride. Hard to put names with handles sometimes.

As mentioned, with your budget you can get a good set of handbuilt wheels. Another $75 - $100 you could get King Hub wheelset or Industry Nines.

Check e-bay for Magura wheelset's. I bought a set of the free ride wheelsets and am happy with them. here's a link:eBay: Magura MTB 26" UST Wheels, Mavic XM 819, DT Swiss Hugi (item 110068650459 end time Dec-21-06 07:14:39 PST)

What hubs do you have now? If they're good quality maybe just get new rims and spokes?

For excellent pricing and quality work on all new, call Larry at Mountain High Cyclery in CO or Chad at Red Barn in Montana. No sales tax with these guys either.

Ya, I was on the Blackstar ride. The hubs I have now I don't want to keep using on the bike. They're from another bike. I'll probably put a new rim and spokes on the back, the problem wheel, and keep it for a backup.

Yeah what he said....VERY POOR. I no longer use them because they always needed maintenance or repair but of course I rode them a couple 100 miles/month. CK hubs are holding up much much better.

I've heard that the Industry 9's have great engagement and all, but when they fail, they fail catastrophically. Plus, they're a bit more than CK's

I love my Hope Hubs, but I don't think I ride as much as you guys.

Hope hubs are the way to go, either dt swiss comp or revolution spokes, or wheelsmith spokes, or sapim spokes. If you are a gram counter take a look at union ti spokes. With rims dt swiss or mavic is always dependable. Ensure that everything is properly dished and tensioned by a pro.

huh? not sure what you are talking about...if you are referring to that dumb picture of the tacoed wheel that is old news.

The Morewood racing team was warned by I9 not to use the XC spokes and was warned by SUN to not use that rim for DH racing...but they refused to listen as they wanted the ligthest setup possible. Long story short, they should have listened and sponsorships have been revoked accordingly by the rim manufacturer as well, as I understand it.

Kings are for queens.......and i cant wait 2 more years for the lame patent to expire so i can get a decent headset that does not creak (like Kings). Hope headsets rock! as do their hubs!

I've bought new rims at oddsandendos that were custom made and at a good price. It was about 18 months ago, but I would recommend them.
