As I've mentioned, I'm using an older mountain bike (1994 Trek 830) as a commuter. I have some Town and Country tires by Continental. They are 26x2.1. I like that for absorbing the bumps of the road. I also like them because they have a Kevlar belt and are puncture resistant. However, I'd like to move faster, if I can. I want some tires with a Kevlar belt, or other puncture resistance, that are more like 26 x 1.5 or so. They're hard to find. Any suggestions?

hear me out. ![]() I was at Incycle on Sunday. They have a killer deal going on the '06 Spec'd Allez Triple. About $800. That'd be fun. But, that bike won't take racks and fenders. So, it sucks for commuting. The Surly Cross-Check seems too heavy to me. (I tested a full-carbon Trek, for fit, Chris told me and it was fasssst.) I could go with the Spec'd TriCross but it's an easy grand. My wife wants me to spend under $1K. So, what I was thinking was I could put skinnier tires on the commuter and get a nice fast little road bike for the weekends and stuff. That sounds fun. Now, Trek makes the Pilot 1.2 which would take racks and probably fenders, but probably not very beefy tires like a 'cross bike. You see my dilemma? I have, as you say, a bullet-proof commuter. I want a faster bike for those rides. But, I want to go faster to and from work, too. Now what do I do?

Here are a few:
$26 Maxxis Overdrive 1.75" and 580 grams $22 Continental Sport Contact 1.3" or 1.6" $27 Shwalbe Marathon Cross 1.7" 680 grams All 3 have the reflective sidewall thing to let the crazy drivers know you're out there. Not sure about the continental but the other 2 have the kevlar bead. |

Okay, but I still need fenders. Real fenders. Not those shorty things they stick on Enduro bikes to make them look cool.
Besides, I'd need a hoss fracking backpack. My trunk and sidebags weights 20 libbies! I'm going to work at school, not on a weekend cruise. I gotta carry my shite! Quote:

Dude, I'm still overweight and driving my Honda doesn't lose me weight (unless I push it, but it's not a Ford, so...). Plus, I *like* riding my bike every day. I'm not trying to save money.

Dude, if I had $2500 and very little sense (which I hope happens one day) then I'd be owning that bike right now. That thing was bomb! Then, none of you muthas would be leaving me in the dust (very far) on the next Tour de Whatever. I'd be at the front of the paceline and everything!

Gurp13 walks out to the garage. A Stumpjumper hangs there. However, on the workstand is a gleaming new roadbike. Gurp approaches the roadbike and puts his hand on it. A SOB comes from the Stumpjumper. Gurp looks over, surprised.
Gurp: Hey, Stumpy! I didn't see you there. Hey, buddy, what's wrong? They both look at the roadbike. Gurp: Oh. You're looking at her, aren't you. Listen, Stumpy, I don't want you to get the wrong idea. You've been real good to me and we've had some good times together. And, I still want to see you. You know? It's not over. It's just that, well, I need to do this, too. See? When I'm riding her, I'm just getting stronger so I can come back to you and ride you harder and faster than ever. It's not like I really like riding her, 'cause I don't. She can only do it the one way, on the road. But, you, you're all over the place. You go wherever I want. She's just faster, that's all. Stumpjumper loooks away suddenly. Gurp: No, wait, it's not like that. I didn't mean it. I mean, on the dirt, she can't beat you. She's... fragile. The trails you go on would beat her to death. Stumpjumper looks up hopefully, an idea. Gurp: What? Oh, no, no we aren't taking her on any trails. Sorry. But, listen. I just want you to understand that we're still gonna have a lot of good time. Maybe even better times now that you and me don't have to hang at the back any more. We'll be fast. Yeah! That's it! We can actually beat some of those guys. The Stumpjumper spins her back wheel and shifts gears aggresively. Gurp: That's it, that's the spirit! So don't you worry about that roadbike. You just remember the real enemy. Stumpjumper: Effing Turners. Gurp and Stumpjumper embrace. They hold each other for a moment. Then, the roadbike looks over sulkily. Gurp sighs. He knows he should have just stuck with one bike. Oh well. It's too late now.

Why would I be envious? I have a Specialized! I'm so sure! Me? Envious of a handmade American bike when I can have a mass-produced made in Taiwan bike? Please! I could have a Turner if I wanted to spend gobs of cash, but I'm just not that silly. And, I'm married.

Damn. Okay, so I have a small one. I'm still not getting a singlespeed. Or a 29er. Or racing. Too bad. But, I'm getting a road bike! ![]()
