Talking SS Crankset?

This guy was telling how great these things R!! I would like to hear from the SSers here that know more about their shit. Please Share history, knowledge and comments about this set up. I know they look wicked Also I don’t know what the deal is w/the exterior-bearing BB system. What’s better? Is there really a difference?

The external BB system are suppose to be stiffer. It's easier to remove and clean the cranks w/ the external system too.

Are you asking how these cranks are as SS cranks?? Or just asking the difference between external bearings and a standard BB???

A friend of mine has these cranks on his SS and I never heard him complain, but he is still running the older version with the BB...

Overall they are good cranks... but as far as external bearings go, all my bikes run regular BB's and untill they blowup, Im not "upgrading" any time soon...

jose, the external bearings are lighter since u don't have to add the bb weight. stiffer, but if not installed properly will be more troublesome in the feature. A lot are having issues with the cups co'z it wasn't installed well, but if done right .. its pretty good. if its something u;'ll buy from 0 then yah its good, but if u want to upgrade .. i think its not worth it.

I had 2004 Truvativ Stylo cranks on my Kona Unit and did not like them much. I was forever trying to get rid of creaky chainring bolts.

Go with the White Industries Eno's or Middleburn's....no chainring bolts. Square taper Eno cranks with a Phil Wood stainless steal bottom backet is the best way to go = $$$

hey dude, errr....Bub.

get the white industries eno cranks. what's it got going for it???
light.
stiff.
square taper.
blingy (and even more so if you sntach up a boone ring from ebay).

pair it with what ever bb you want. a $20 XT BB, A $50-60 race face taperlock or am classic (what i run) or a $100 phil wood.

the eno cranks will run you about $130. the path can hook you up. i am sutre them have them in stock. and,m they will have a bb that will work good for ya too.

cheers!

The Path only has the 180mm versions of the ENO in stock. I've been waiting for a set of the 175's to come in. If another week passes, I might just give in and get the 180's - and hope that I don't get any toe rub.

I agree about the WI ENOs. I've had them on my 29er for a year. Although I run it as a 1x9 now. I love those cranks. The other ones I'd like to try are the Middleburns.

I got those. I had them on a previous SS and on my current ride with no problems, they’re working fine. I’m running the 180s.

External bearings seem good theoretically. What really matters is the quality of the bearings. My wife has FSA external bearings that are wasted after 6 months. My previous Truvativ bearings lasted about a year. I had a Race Face Signature ISIS BB that lasted 4 year. ISIS uses the smallest bearings of all the options. Old square taper Shimano UN?? seem to last a long time and are almost disposable at $15-20 a pop.

I doubt there is any significant difference in stiffness between the different BB systems. If anything is flexing under peddling torque, it’s the frame and crankarm.

I really wanted to get those sexy White Ind Eno cranks. If I didn’t get such a good deal on the Truvativ Stylos, I would have gotten the Eno with a cheapo $13 Shimano BB to start. The normal street cost and total weight would have been about the same as the Stylo.

I would really like have the Eno’s with a super bling Phil Wood BB for a total weight of 660 grams.

Middleburns and old XTR are cool too, just harder to get.

Jose, there seems to be a general agreement here, just go to The Path and buy the Eno's.
