my dashboard looks nothign like this. Are you using the software that came with it?

On these Garmin 305s can you download a trial that you have never been before like from Geo Ladders and it will tell you where to go so you don't get lost?

on Geoladders you have two options:

Free: you download the Route Only which just points you in the right direction with a compass like display

Pay: you download the .nav file which gives you turn by turn directions in nearly real time. You'll be on the trail and it'll say, "left turn, 300ft" - coolest thing ever

however, I've downloaded a couple "free" files that have come with turn by turn directions.

Santiago Oaks and a loop in Claremont both come to mind.

No it's a Mac program. I tried the stock unit and it seemed to blow pretty bad in comparison.
