Default Anyone have thoughts on a KHS AM 2000

I have a friend wanting to buy his son a bike in $1000 range. The KHS am 2000 seems like a decent choice. Any ideas?

thanks.

looks decent if you are happy with hone components I think they have pretty good feedback, the fork is junk in my opinion but im sure there is people who would say otherwise

I had an 05 am1000 with a 66 and it held up well for awhile until I cracked the downtube in 2 places by the lower shock mount. The bike held up to 8+ foot drops with a big guy riding it. Also watch the chainstays too, I've known a few people who broke them there too. Khs is GREAT with the warrenty though, no questions asked and I had a brand new frame and new shock.

I ride a KHS...my 2nd one actually...and I am very happy with both of them. I'm on an XC series F/S (XC 204-XC 604 lineup).

Good welds, pretty light @ 29.1 lbs (it's 4.2" travel and I don't have any real lightweight stuff), and has held up very well. I'm a heavier rider and definitely put my bikes through their paces.

I would buy another...and I might actually buy the AM you're talking about next.

There aren't many other brands that offer so much bike for so little money...read the reviews on most of the KHS bikes and you'll usually read something like "rides very similar to the other bikes we tested that cost $1000 more".

You could also look at the Iron Horse MKIII for aroudn the same price I believe is a little more burly not that the KHS are bad bikes but they turn the MKIII into SS and 4x bikes and they hold up and can be close to sub 30 if built right

Nice entry level bike. You can upgrade the fork for sure, like Rockinthecasbah said. Other than that, it seems ok. My first "real" bike was something sort of similar. Oh, I just re-read the post. For sure. Great bike for a friend's son. I'd be super stoked if my Dad bought me this!

After looking at the IH and the KHS, I'd still get the KHS. I think the KHS wins in components, price, and looks (don't like the S-bend down tubes on the IH bikes...tubes also look skinnier on the IH).

As for the RS Pike, it's not a bad fork. I wouldn't upgrade it until I had a good reason to anyway. I'm still riding a Duke SL from god-knows-when. It's not like a better fork will make him a better rider - and if your friend is relatively new to MTB, he wouldn't know the difference in feel between a $600 fork and a $1000 fork anyway.

If it ain't broke...

The mk's are kinda flexy and weak. The khs am's can also be built into 4x bikes, thats what most of the team[except dale holmes because he rides a hardtail] uses. They usually run shorther shocks on the bikes though.

I am surprised that there is Hone on the rear. They don't mount to a hanger but to the axle. They should be more durable though.

Deore and Hone are both low end.

You might want to buy a frame and just try to find better parts for a built.

You might be better off finding a used bike like this for about $1,000.
