I took posession of my new Dean Optics Trooper goggles last Saturday in Deer Valley from the man himself (JD!)
I've owned and worn a lot of different goggles in a lot of different race conditions, I was curious if the new Trooper goggles would hang with the big boys. First thing you notice is the obvious good looks of the Trooper. I love the lines and best of all, the little "hood scoop" on top of the goggles just above the eyes is functional. You couldn't feel that standing still, but on the ride, you could feel air moving down the inside of the goggles preventing that "hot eye" effect when tempratures are less than desirable. I had my pick of colors so I went with flat white with the mirrored lens' (bit of a bronze look to them from the outside, but a nice light shade of tint on the inside. Perfect for all ocassions!) Dean Optics has red and black available as well. First thing I did was swap out the stock clear lens with the mirror tinted lens. Lemme tell you somethin'. There's nothing that had me cursin' and spitting more than trying to change lens' out. They should be so simple, but once you got one side lined up, the other would pop out. So very frustrating. The Dean Optics Trooper lens swap was nothing like I experienced before. Easy. Too easy. Almost like I didn't do it right, but a quick check revealed that it was snug and lined up perfectly. Could it be? A lens that's easy to change? Believe it my friends-the Trooper lens swapy is so easy even I could do it. Function. I wore these goggles on race day up at Deer Valley and at Nellis BMX the follwing Tuesday and I was extremely pleased. The tint was perfect. Not too dark, not so light. It was a happy medium. Eye reflection was way down and it was no problem in the bright Las Vegas sun. Fogging was a problem with my Spys in the heat, but the Troopers stayed clear and the air from the scoop really helped my eyes from "sweating." The final verdict: The Trooper goggles are the real deal and I highly recommend them to every rider who wants to preserve their sight. They look great and function even better. The lens is easy to change and the head strap was easy to adjust. The Trooper is the first pair of eyeware from Dean Optics and if this is the level of workmanship and design we can expect from Dean, than those other optic companies had better step it up. I rode for Utopia until they turned their backs on the MTB world, then I went back to my Spys. My Spys are good, but the Troopers really are a better pair of goggles. I saw Deans all over the place at Deer Valley.
