Default Hard tail buying help

I am currently looking to purchase a used hard tail to do some trail riding. I am a student so I don't have alot of money to spend and I was wondering if anyone knew where I should look for some good deals. I am about 5'10" and would probably ride a 17" frame. Thanks.

How much you want to spend?

Did you see this thread? (http://socaltrailriders.org/forum/showthread.php?t=1849)

If that bike is more than you want to spend, I have a circa-Y2K Kona steelframe hardtail that I may be willing to part with. It is a no-nonsense solidly built trail bike that would get you out on the trails for not a lot of dough. I haven't really thought about how much I'd sell it for, but let me know if you are interested and I'll work up a price.

Try the Jenson USA link at the top of this page. They typically have a few great deals on hardtails. I bought 2 17" Komodo's 2 years ago for $185.00 each.

If you're looking for a solid no-frills frame, they probably have something right up your alley.

Hope this helps.

What's your budget for a bike? I might be able to put something together for you with Marin B-17 frame. A slightly different parts spec than below depending on what your budget is.

Wow! Thanks for the quick responses. I was looking to spend somewhere between $200 and $400. I don't know if that is possible but I was going to see what's out there and then go for it. Thanks for the help!

Thanks Epic. That frame is definitely durable and has a really nice psuedo Ti finish. I just don't ride it much because I usually opt for my 5"X5" bike.

Does anyone have an idea on how much it would cost me to build up a used hardtail bike with LX drivetrain. I don't really know what else I would want on it but something that would stop when I braked and not fall apart when I went over a rock. I was thinking of just buying used parts and scrapping something together. What do you guys think?

I think you're going to be better off buying a used bike complete. Without looking, I'm guessing you will be looking at around another $600 to $800 for an LX level complete build including wheels and a fork if you bought everything new.

You should be able to pick up a solid complete hardtail in your budget (used).

I might be able to do that for you with your budget.

XT rear/LX front or Deore rear/alivio front
Kona steelframe hardtail
LX brake levers/XT rim brakes
Marzocchi EXR pro 100 mm fork

PM me if you want to know more or want me to post pics. No obligations.
