What color should I get my new hubs in? I think I've decided on DT 5.1 rims and Hope bulb hubs. But what color should I get my hubs in?
Hope offers the hub in red, black, silver, gold. I'm debating between black and silver or even a black up front and silver in back. Here's my bike [albumimg:c0c264ba5a]50[/albumimg:c0c264ba5a]

Another vote for gold, I have gold Hope bulbs on my 6 Pack and I love em. I also have red ones on my 575.....but with your black frame I'd go with gold
The 5.1 rims are nice, but have you considered the Mavic 819's? I would go that route if you plan on running Stan's, just makes it easier to start with a tubeless rim......although I guess you can buy a tubeless kit for the 5.1's from my understanding. Either way they'll be a sweet set of wheels. |

XT are heavy but really cheap. XTR are light but more expensive and you need a special rotor to bolt onto XTR hubs. I cant tell you much about the Hopes but they have a nice finish and look cool.
If you are looking for a nice set of wheels check this guy out www.oddsandendos.com. He built me a really light set of wheels with WTB Laser Disk Lite hubs that have held up great for almost three years. really good prices too. ![]() |

You can't go wrong with the Hope bulb hubs for the price. They are just as light or even lighter than King's...and WAY cheaper. The only difference will be in the rear hub as you won't have that instant engagement, but that isn't a big deal and hardly noticeable. I have 2 sets of Bulbs and I have had zero complaints. I just sold one of them laced to a Mavic 321 rim in front to Dino and he is loving it so far also. They are smooth, quiet and light. I haven't taken them apart but I guess the front is just a simple cartridge bearing which would be easily available from any bearing supplier and pretty simple to replace. The best thing is on the front hubs is how easy it is to convert from regular quick release to 20mm, it literally only takes 2 minutes. Get a set before the price goes up because I think they are gaining popularity and of course supply and demand will cause a price increase sooner than later.

OK, I've decided on color. That'll be a surprise once I get them.
BUT . . . now I'm having second thoughts about dt5.1 vs. mavic 819. From what I've read, the 5.1 is stronger, wider, and stiffer. The mavic on the other hand, is a UST rim. Is the 819 skinny enough to make a tire feel 'squirmy' around a corner? Rob, do you still use sealant on the 819? Do you use UST tires on it? I guess I should ask myself if I'm going to use tubeless? I'm also a bit concerned with weight. I know either will be plenty strong enough for me, but which will be lighter? I think I shop like a girl ![]()

I'm running the 819's on my 6 Pack and don't have any squirly feeling in the tires when cornering. Which rim will be lighter is going to depend on if you go tubeless or not. The 5.1's are slightly lighter, but if you want to run Stan's on them you'd have to buy the tubeless kit which will add weight. The 819's you can just use a regular non-ust tire and put Stan's sealant in there and be done, which will end up being lighter. I have a 2.5 Blue Groove w/819 on the front with no rim strips....just a regular 2.5 Kenda stick-e and some sealant and it has worked fine. I've ridden down Stairsteps/T&A, etc. and it feels great. It is nice having a wider rim like the 5.1's, but if you end up going tubeless/Stan's the 819's will end up being lighter. At your weight the 819's will be plenty strong for those 5ft drops \

Went with the DT Swiss 4.1. Figured at my weight, I could get away with the relatively lightweight rims. O ya . . . and black hope hubs.
Should be shipped this coming Monday by Chad over at Red Barn Cycles.
