My wife has decided she'd like to try cycling. I'm sure I'll get her on the dirt eventually but she want to have some conditioning and experience on two wheels before going off-road. It may turn out that she doesn't like cycling after all so we don't want a big investment. Looking for something that maybe older or more used but still serviceable.
A "Women's Specific Design" is not required but could be a plus. A hybrid bike would be okay, too. She's 5' 8", with a 32" inseam. Something around 52" to 54" on a road bike or a medium in a hybrid/mountain bike. Anyone got any ideas?

I'd take a look at the Giant Sedona and Cypress series bikes. The Sedona has 26" wheels and the cypress has 700c wheels, but are otherwise similar with a more relaxed upright seating position. The have a suspension fork and seatpost so the ride is comfortable and really do ride smoothly.
I bought my wife a Sedona about 4 or 5 years ago and although she doesn't ride often, she does like her bike. It would shock me if she ever rode anything close to a real MTB trail and has no interest in riding with a fast group, so it has been a great bike for her. http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-US/...en/1276/29336/ Many other companies offer similar options so check them out (Trek, Marin, GF, Specialized, etc.). Personally, I would consider taking her and let her pick it out. Bike shopping is fun and if she chooses it herself, she may like it more (and therefore be more inclined to ride it). |

Find her a decent hardtail mountain bike and put some tires on it that are good for either pavement or fireroad. Then you can take her out on either, and she can get a feel for it.
Road may seem like the natural first choice but it could be intimidating with the cars. She might really like riding fire-roads as a first step into riding. But with mid-range tires, she can try pavement too. So then you've got a bike you can do both with. Ideally, if she really digs it, you can put knobbier tires on the hardtail and make it her mtn bike. |

I've got a sweet Specialized frame I had powdercoated for my wife along with a carbon Alpha-Q fork.
She just upgraded to titanium, so this is for sale. just frame fork but FWIW. $225 for frame/fork/headset (p.s. just fork is $250 new) my wife is 5'7. this is a Specialized 56 I think.

Thanks for the replies, all. I'm going to look into the options. (Sharky, I replied in your thread about the LeMond.) We wanted something pretty cheap ($200 or less, if it was possible) so we'll see. Any other ideas still welcome.
