I agree with Gene here. You can use Sspeed techniques on this bike to power up hills. But you'll still have the benefit of the lower gears in case you get tired. It's two different techniques, powering up vs. spinning. Both are great to know. You can do both on the Yeti.

But then again, Hey, if you dump the Yeti now, you can get something sweet down the road when the lure of gears and suspension grabs you. I.e. Pivot Mach 4?

I'm facing the same issue. I've been riding my 1x9 hardtail alot lately and it climbs much faster than my spider. For 90% of the trails, it seems much faster not carrying the 5 extra pounds. I try to stay in the middle ring of the spider 90% of the time, but when I drop into the granny ring, it throws my cadence off. I have to upshift the rear at the same time to compensate.
To avoid having to shift I am converting to a 2x8, but making the granny at least 1:1 ratio with a 30T 11x32. Of course I will need the bigger ring (40T) for the downhills, I'd spin out a 30/11.
