Hello, Everyone
My name is Ron and I'm starting my journey into the world of mountain biking. I'm on the hunt for my first "name brand" bike. I live in Porter Ranch (SF Valley). If anyone has suggestions on bike shops in the area that have good prices and knowledgeable sales people, please let me know. I'm deciding whether or not to get a HT or FS bike. $1k is the most I'm willing to spend at this point. |

welcome ron. since you have an established budget, go ride as many bikes as you can that fit within that budget and go with what feels best. bottom line is, you will get a low to mid-grade f/s rig (new, frame will be good, but components will be pretty weak) for $1k and a pretty solid h/t for $1k. better to bite the bullet and spend more at the time of purchase rather than upgrading down the line, you'll spend way more. there are a few recent threads on "what bike to buy" on this site, fart around with the "search" function and you will most likely be able to find them. everyone is going to have a different opinion on what brand of bike to get, so like i said earlier, ride a bunch, and go with what feels best. once you do that and ride the bike for about a year or so, you will learn of what you like about the bike, and what you dislike about the bike, you'll have a better understanding of what is worth upgrading and what is not. the upgrade bug is like a plague around here, be careful!

Good luck with your purchase; as stated above, the best thing to do is to try a bunch and get a good one!

I hate to say it but you will probably get more for that 1K by buying used than new.
I really hate to say it but try eBay (eBay is the devil) or the classifieds here or craigslist or some of the other MTB sites out there. Feel free to ask questions here if you are unsure of something before you make your purchase. Welcome Aboard! |
