In retrospect, I don't understand either. The BMX bikes now are much nicer, and even 20+ years later, cost less! And quite honestly, even though I like the memories, I really don't like riding old-school BMX bikes anymore.

Hmm...I'm getting tempted to build a modern 24" bike...King hubs and headset, hydraulic disc (not that I'd ever need that much brake), Thomsen stem and post, Saint crank...now just to pick a frame...and then figure out how to put disc tabs on it. (By the way, this isn't a new concept, people have been building BMX bikes like these for a while now.) Maybe that Intense would go nicely with my 5.5 and VPX.

Neccros, I know you've been eyeing my cruiser...maybe you can make me an offer I can't refuse so I can justify building a new bike.

Lee,

Specialized a couple of years ago had disc brake tabs on their HEMI frame which sadly they discontinued in 2005....

Again another frame id like to get my hands on!!

Intense DOES make one!!

Also Sheep Hills is very much alive and kicking!! Slater Trails died a couple of years ago but ALOT of people are riding Sheep as of lately.... Its been cleaned up really well and the dirts in really good condition

Its protected by the city so it will never really die...

Irvine has been long gone (was off of Culver near the fire station). Orange is still going. Coal Canyon closed up a few years back. I'm not sure of the status of Sheep Hills, but it wasn't an official track.

Oh, Intense does have a cruiser! Intense BMX

By the way, Intense BMX is not run by Intense. It was owned by Toby Henderson (Toby Henderson Enterprises, aka THE), but now it looks like it's owned by VSI, which I have no knowledge of. The frames are not made at Intense in Temecula like the mtb frames - likely overseas (and perhaps better quality?).

I completely agree! I think my BMX background has greatly helped my mtb skills. Also, it teaches you to ride smoothly, although riding a fully rigid singlespeed also helps.

Was SE the only ones that made 26" BMX bikes back in the day???

I actually just talked to bike shop in fullerton and they have a full bike for 399.00? But for the frame it is like 300.00 I am seriously going to buy one I am going to put a sachs dualdrive 9 speed internal rear hub so I can run one chainring in the front. This is great setup I have a rolhoff speed hub on my mountain bike and no derailuers

I just relized that wont work no derailer hanger and I guess that would defeat the true purpose of the bike im a moron

Do you remember the Browning 2-speed systems? It had a chain tensioner in the rear, and a hinged front chainring. Here's a sample eBay: Browning BMX 2 Speed Transmission System Bicycle Part (item 320071979860 end time Jan-17-07 17:21:02 PST)

Yeah, a frame and fork is $300, and sweet bikes are around $400. Is the shop you're looking at Fullerton Bike Shop on Commonewealth? If so, the owner, Mike Franzie, is an old-school BMX guy and the one who gets the most credit for the Parks track.

makes sense that THE owns the intense bmx line.. at the orange Y nearly everyone was on intense frames and seems like THE was all over the place as well.

I was thinking about getting one of those a few years ago. Who cares if it's a good bike with such a cool name and paint job (assuming it still comes in orange with a "01" on it). From what I remember, it's a good bike. Heck, I bet it's hard to find a bad BMX bike in a bike shop in the expected price range. For the most part, the difference between any $400 BMX bike is splitting hairs (and that's coming from an admitted bike snob!

The bike that gets you riding is the best one!

TwoWheel Lee,
Did you ever shake some of the cobwebs loose. Remember Parks? - Heck we were some of the original dirt slingers (2nd graduationg class of Parks JHS). Do you also remember.....
  1. Jumping the stairs at Parks (the Bball courts down to the track)
  2. The old plywood jump off of Pioneer. You could launch from the city side over the fence and land on the Hughes Aircraft property right below Bastanchury Waters
  3. The uncontrolable rides down "Sand Hill" off of Rosecrans
  4. What about the "Steps" over by Los Coyotes Country Club down by Malvern - graded slopes you could never ride up and could never get enough speed to ever land on the flat.
My knees are starting to hurt just thinking about it.

OTHRIDER,
Who are you? By chance, does/did your house back up to Pioneer?

I grew up at the south end of the Country Club (Malvern and Monticello, across from Dale). Heck, my dad bought the house in '69, and he still lives there.

By chance did you also know of "The Ditch"? It was the field west of the strawberry stand on Dale. I was doing 6'+ drops to tranny back in the late 70s/early 80's on my old 20 incher. These days, I couldn't imagine doing some of the stuff I did back then even if I were on a DH bike.

There was only one person that I know of who tried to actually jump the stairs (not to the side of them) at Parks, but he wadded it up pretty hard. I think it was Billy Gasper, or something like that.

Some of the other things you mentioned sound familiar. Heck, I remember riding in "Honda Hills" being chased by the police, but for the life of me, I can't remember any other details from that (for the better, probably). I won't, or shouldn't, even get into stories regarding the Country Club.
