Default Taos rider loose in OC

I grew up in Orange County but now live in Taos,NM. It is pretty hard to get me out of the mountains, but I will be spending Thanksgiving in Yorba Linda with my sister and family. Needless to say, I will be needing a few places to ride. When I left the area in 1990 I had never heard of Mountain Biking so I am curious what is out there. My tastes run from fast XC to the freeride thing. I would appreciate advice on trails as well as advice on what bike to bring. AM? XC? single speed? rigid? I really have no idea what to expect and obviously have a bit of a bike thing.
Hate to ask a question like this without hoping that you are all ok with the recent fires. I remember a huge fire about 1982 or so that burned right up the back door of my folks place, damn scariest thing I had ever been a part of. Riding aside, I hope all is ok.

Greg hook up with something in the San Gabriel Mountains you will be pleasantly surprised. I will be in Prescott or I would show you around. I spend sometime in Albuquerque and have wanted to get into your neck of the woods.

If your going to Yorba Linda, your closest trail would be the Oaks, just on the other side of the 91 in Anaheim Hills. Chino Hills State Park is close, but it might be closed due to the recent fire.

Another good near by ride would be Whiting Ranch, El Moro, San Juan and or the Luge. Lots of great places to ride

There are rides for all bike types. The free ride stuff will likely not be posted but there should be rides scheduled in the Trailhead forum for the other disciplines.

If you're looking for free ride rides, just post your schedule asking for a pm when a group is riding that you could join up with.

Nice! I work at Philmont in Cimarron during the summers (I'm sure you've probably seen a few of the staffers ruthlessly invading Taos and Eagles Nest on their breaks ). I can't wait to go back to ride in Angel Fire.

Yeah, Chino Hills has been burnt badly. Though, as mentioned above, the Luge just re-opened.

I'd bring the AM bike if you can only bring one.

Is there a place on this site that has directions or GPS data to trailheads? Sounds like there are some things worth checking out. Would someone mind commenting on the amount of climbing on any given trail towards figuring out what one bike to bring?

Geoladders is very cool. What is HWY 241? Puts Yorba Linda very close to Mission Viejo. Used to be a very long and slow way around. (ex Mission Viejo swimmer). I can't wait to ride there. Thanks all.

It is the 241 Toll Road. It costs anywhere from 2-5 dollars (estimate) to go one way on it.
