Talking Hi all from Irvine

So I'm a noob to this forum, but love it already. I live in Irvine, riding an 06 IDRIVE 5 2.0 (had to get the full Fox). I used to ride all the time and just recently got back in to it, so I guess I would classify myself as a re-noob

Anyway I have some general questions and don't know where to post them, so I would imagine, I can get some answers here. First, is there weekly rides in my area (irvine)? Second, should I get a helmet mount light or a bar mount light? Last but not least, Should I go HID or halogen?

Thanks for your time and input and I'm looking forward to riding with you all out on the trails....

Plenty of rides posted on the calendar (click on "calendar" in the brown header above or in the Trailhead forum.

You will get many different opinions of the merits of handlebar vs helmet mount, HID vs Halogen vs LED

Welcome to STR

Welcome.

As for the lighting setup, it would be good to know 1) the budget? 2) are you an animal on the trail? 3) do you feel the need to have the best, lightest & brightest?

You could post on the Thursday night Fully Loop thread asking to borrow a light for a night and then check out what others are using. There's usually someone with an extra light that's willing to share so long as they have enough notice to charge it and bring it.

Im going to UCI right now and there is a mountain bike club on campus. So if you want to join us for rides let me know. Sometimes we just head to el moro and ride there or we do some rides further away on the weekends too.

It really depends on the type of trails you ride but I would go with a helmet mount first. You can move the light where you want to go. You can always get a cheapo light for your handle bar.

I'm in Irvine too. Nothing in Irivne but Aliso Woods, Peter's Canyon, Whiting Ranch (now closed), Blackstar Canyon, and El Moro Canyon are nearby. Someone else already mentioned Fullerton Loop.

Some lights come with mounts for handlebars and helmets so you can figure out which one you prefer. HID are brighter and more expensive than Halogen. LEDs have better battery life but the ones as bright as HID are expensive (but LEDs are getting cheaper and brighter all the time.) Get the brightest light you can afford. The most expensive option is to get a cheap light and then buy the expensive light later on when you realize your cheap lights sucks. An expensive light is worth every penny and is cheaper than a trip to the ER.

I'm from Irvine also and there is some great riding in the city. Usually the trails are only open for docent lead rides but once a month they have open access days and you can ride on you own after signing a waiver, The next open access day is this Saturday.

Wilderness Access Day

http://www.irvineranchwildlands.org/...ties/index.asp

It's listed under the Earth day Celebration on 4/19 in Bommer Canyon

I signed up for me and my wife, but I could use help on what paperwork etc and steps I need to take to ride. Not to mention where I should go to ride with only one day to go. Interested in helping me out with all of this??? I could buy lunch -

Welcome SoCalRider,

I'm from Plastic Fantastic too! (Woodbridge Village). Definitely check out those rides/hikes at IRC because it's private land and beeyootifull... Some of them are high on the interpretive scale so you'll learn alot, too.
Between IRC and STR you'll have more than enough rides to choose from.
